Jesse Cates Poppy Seed Bread image

I found this in the newspaper many years ago; it is supposed to be the bread they serve at Jesse Cates restaurant. It has been so long since I've had the original, I can't say how close it is, but I can say my family loves it! For a really decadent treat spread a warm slice with honey butter -- yum!

Time 1h40m

Yield 2 loaves, 16-20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons sugar
3 1/3 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup plus 1 tbsp poppy seed
1 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups milk or 1 1/2 cups soymilk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
3 eggs or 3/4 cup egg white

Steps:

  • Combine dry ingredients and poppy seeds in large bowl, blending well.
  • Mix oil, milk, vanilla and eggs in separate bowl.
  • Add dry ingredients to liquid ingredients. Mix at medium speed until smooth, about 4 minutes, scraping the bowl often.
  • Pour into 2 8x4 inch greased pans, or a 9x11 inch cake pan.
  • Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour 25 minutes, or until test done with a toothpick and is golden. (I usually bake them for closer to an hour, so keep an eye on them.).
