Yield 1 loaf

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1/2 cup milk, scalded (heated til starts to boil)
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening or salad oil (I use butter)
2 1/2 cups flour
1 beaten egg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon butter

Steps:

  • Soften yeast in warm water (put in separate bowl from next ingredients). Combine scalded milk, sugar, salt, butter, stirring to melt butter. Cool til lukewarm. Add enough flour to milk mixture to make a thick batter. Add the beaten egg and beat well. Add the softened yeast and stir. Add remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface til smooth and satiny (about 10 minutes). Place in lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease surface. Cover and let rise in warm place til double (about 1 1/2 hours). Punch dough down; round into ball and let rest 10 minutes (covered). Grease bottom and sides of a bread pan generously with butter (8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 size pan or 9x5x3) On lightly floured board, roll out dough into 12x15 inch rectangle; brush with melted butter (about 1 tablespoon). Combine the 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon and sprinkle most on the dough (use the rest to coat the inside of the bread pan). Fold dough in thirds to make a 4x15 inch strip; cut into 10 equal slices. Put strips of dough, cut side down, close together in the bread pan. Cover; let rise in warm place til almost double (about 45 minutes) Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Turn out immediately. After it cools a little, mix about 1 cup of powdered sugar with some milk or cream to make a thick drizzling icing and drizzle on top of bread.
