TEXAS-STYLE BAKED BEANS



Texas-Style Baked Beans image

Take the time to make up a batch of these authentic Texas baked beans the next time you have an outdoor cookout. They are sure to be a hit! These are great if you don't have a smoker, but if you have access to a good hickory or pecan fire, take advantage. For a real Texas experience, enjoy a bottle of Lone Star® beer for yourself and one for the beans while you make them.

1 tablespoon butter, or as needed
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 red onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced, or more to taste
1 tablespoon butter, or as needed
1 pound bacon, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
3 jalapeno peppers, minced, or to taste
1 cup beer, or more to taste
1 cup barbeque sauce
1 cup brown sugar
¼ cup molasses
6 cups cooked pinto beans
1 pinch garlic salt, or to taste
cracked black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon butter.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Saute onion and garlic in hot oil until onion begins to soften, 5 to 7 minutes. Add bacon, bell pepper, and jalapeno peppers; cook and stir until bacon is browned, 7 to 10 minutes more.
  • Stir beer, barbeque sauce, brown sugar, and molasses together in a large bowl; add pinto beans and bacon mixture. Season with garlic salt and black pepper. Pour beans mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until bubbling and browned, about 45 minutes.

Usually I don't care for baked beans because they're too sweet. These have a bite--nothing better than a combination of hot and sweet. I substited sausage for the ground beef (personal preference). Recipe courtesy of Scrubbie1 and allrecipes.com.

1 lb ground beef
64 ounces baked beans (with pork)
4 ounces green chilies, chopped
1 vidalia onion, peeled and chopped
1 cup barbecue sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon chili powder
3 tablespoons hot pepper sauce (Tabasco)

Steps:

  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink.
  • Drain fat and set aside.
  • In a 3 1/2 quart or larger slow cooker, combine the ground beef, baked beans, green chilies, onion, and barbecue sauce.
  • Season with brown sugar, garlic powder, chili powder, and hot pepper sauce.
  • Cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 4 to 5 hours.

28 oz baked beans with pork
1 onion, diced
1 medium bell pepper, diced
4 links spicy pork sausage, cut into small chunks
2 Tbsp chili powder
3 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
4 Tbsp vinegar
1/2 c brown sugar, packed
1/2 c ketchup
1 tsp garlic powder
salt, to taste
1 dash(es) cayenne pepper, optional

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • 2. In a Dutch oven, combine the baked beans, onion, bell pepper, and sausage.
  • 3. Season with chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, garlic powder and salt. Add a dash of cayenne if desired.
  • 4. Cover and bake for one hour in the preheated oven.

1 lb ground beef
2 Tbsp mustard
2 tsp vinegar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup catsup
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp garlic powder
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 medium green pepper
2 cans pork & beans
1 can red kidney beans, drained
1 can small green lima beans

Steps:

  • Lightly brown ground beef, drain, and set aside.
  • Mix mustard, vinegar, brown sugar, catsup, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Place in small saucepan with ground beef, stir, and simmer 2 minutes.
  • Mix: chopped onion, chopped celery, green pepper, pork & beans, red kidney beans, and small green lima beans. Mix with top mixture and place in large baking dish.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.
