Number Of Ingredients 10

3/4 c self-rising flour
1 c self-rising corn meal (not mix)
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 small onion, finely minced (I use sweet onion)
1 pinch garlic powder
1 pinch onion powder
1 pinch Old Bay seasoning
1 Tbsp sugar
3/4 to 1 c buttermilk
canola oil for frying

Steps:

  • 1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together flour and cornmeal. Add egg, onion, sugar, and spices.
  • 2. Add buttermilk and stir with a fork just until blended. The mixture should be fairly stiff. Add a little bit more buttermilk, if necessary.
  • 3. Heat oil in deep-fryer to 375 degrees.
  • 4. Drop dough by teaspoons into hot oil.
  • 5. Fy until hush puppies rise to the top and are golden brown.
  • 6. Remove from the fryer and drain on paper towels.
  • 7. Serve hot with honey butter, if desired. Enjoy delicious Southern-style hush puppies!

When I was about 4 or 5 year old, my late Mamaw fixed this recipe as a side dish to her "Fried Southern Catfish" recipe, which I have posted on here. My mom asked me what I ate. I was so young that I couldn't say hush puppies, so I told her that I ate "Shut Up Puppies" - LOL

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 c pancake mix
1/3 c plain corn meal
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 c finely chopped onion
1 egg, beaten
1/3 c buttermilk

Steps:

  • 1. Sift first 5 ingredients.
  • 2. Mix in last 3 ingredients just prior to frying.
  • 3. Drop by teaspoon into deep heated fat.
  • 4. Fry on all sides until golden brown.
  • 5. Drain on paper towels.

When I was a kid my mom made these all the time. Now my kids (who are grown) make them and I make them for my Grandkids. This is also known as Johnny Cake.

2 c plain corn meal
1/4 c sugar or splenda
1/4 c + 3 tbsp minced onion
1 1/2 c buttermilk
1 Tbsp flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 egg, beaten

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together cornmeal, sugar, flour, soda and salt; add onions. Stir egg and buttermilk together and add to dry mixture; mix together and drop by spoonfuls into hot oil. When done hush puppies will float to top. Remove, drain on paper towel. Enjoy!!!
