My mom use to make this dish for our dad who was in the army, because he was givin it to eat when ever the army who send him away. Mom use to call it S.O.S. Then my mom started making it for my brothers David who oined the Navy & my brother James who joined the Marines. In the main pic to this recipe is a pic of 3 of my brothers....

Steps:
- 1. First in a large saucepan brown the hamburger over nedium heat. Season with a little of the salt & pepper.
- 2. Next mix in the mushroom soup & water. Bring to a boil, taste to see if you need more salt & pepper.
- 3. Then toast the bread before serving. Place 2 slices of toast on the plate them pour a laddle full of the cream of hamburger over the toast.
- 4. Then add all four of my borthers to the table & they will know what it is with a saying a word.

Steps:
- Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat and set aside.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat, being careful not to burn it. Slowly whisk in the flour to make a roux. You are looking for a thick consistency. Add the chicken base, seasoned salt and garlic. Slowly whisk in the milk. Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil. Let it boil for 2 to 3 minutes and then lower the heat to medium, whisking periodically until the mixture gets thick. Whisk in the black pepper and browned beef.
- Toast the white bread and put the slices on serving plates. Ladle the SOS over the top of the toast. Serve with home fries and a piece of fruit.
- Put the potatoes in a large skillet with cooking oil and cook for 10 minutes. Add the bell peppers and onions, and continue cooking until golden brown.
SOUP OR SAUCE MIX (SOS)
Found online from the Utah State University Extension Service. This is similar to other dry cream of ?? soup mixes. Look for other recipes that call for this mix specifically. I will post the recipe numbers here after approved.

Steps:
- Combine all ingredients in a re-closeable plastic bag.
- Store in plastic bag or air-tight container until ready to use. It does not need too be refrigerated.
- To substitute for 1 can of cream soup in a casserole: Combine 1/3 cup of dry mix with 1 1/4 cups cold water.
- Cook and stir on stove top or in microwave until thickened.
- Add thickened mixture to casserole as you would a can of soup.
