Steps:

  • In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, thyme, parsley, and oregano. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add milk, using just enough to form a thick batter.

Nothing could be more comforting than tender chicken, swimming in a creamy, thyme-scented gravy, made with Progresso™ chicken broth and topped with fluffy, herb-flecked dumplings.

2 1/2 lb boneless skinless chicken thighs (about 10 thighs)
3 cups Progresso™ chicken broth (from 32-oz carton)
4 medium carrots, peeled and cut diagonally into 1/4-inch slices
3 stalks celery, cut diagonally into 1/4-inch slices
1 medium onion, diced (1/2 cup)
1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
2 cups Original Bisquick™ mix
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Steps:

  • Spray 5-quart oval slow cooker with cooking spray. In slow cooker, mix chicken, broth, carrots, celery, onion, thyme, salt and pepper. Cover; cook on High heat setting 3 to 4 hours or on Low heat setting 6 to 7 hours.
  • Uncover; using 2 forks, shred chicken into large chunks. If using Low heat setting, increase to High. In small bowl, beat cornstarch and water with whisk until smooth. Add cornstarch mixture and cream to slow cooker; stir to combine. Cover and continue to cook on High heat setting 20 to 25 minutes or until slightly thickened.
  • Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir together Bisquick™ mix, milk and 2 tablespoons of the parsley until soft dough forms.
  • Drop dumpling batter by heaping tablespoons onto simmering chicken mixture in slow cooker. Cover and cook 20 to 25 minutes or until knife inserted into dumplings comes out clean.
  • Divide stew and dumplings into 6 serving bowls, and sprinkle with remaining parsley. Serve immediately.

4 pounds boneless beef chuck, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 tablespoons peanut oil
4 thick-sliced bacon strips, chopped
3 cups finely chopped onions
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 bay leaf
5 1/2 cups canned beef broth
1 14 1/2-ounce can crushed tomatoes with added purée
6 medium carrots, peeled, cut diagonally into 1-inch pieces
3 medium rutabagas, peeled, cut into 3/4-inch pieces
For dumplings
2/3 cup whole milk
2 large eggs
3 tablespoons minced chives
2 tablespoons minced fresh Italian parsley
1 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
§ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • Make stew:
  • Position rack in center of oven; preheat to 325°F. Pat beef dry. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Heat oil in heavy large ovenproof pot over medium-high heat. Working in batches, cook beef until brown, stirring occasionally and scraping up browned bits, about 8 minutes. Transfer meat to bowl.
  • Add bacon to same pot. Sauté until crisp, scraping up browned bits, about 5 minutes. Add onions, garlic, thyme and bay leaf. Cover and cook until onions are tender, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Return beef and any accumulated juices to pot. Add 5 cups canned beef broth and crushed tomatoes with purée. Cover and bring to simmer.
  • Transfer pot to oven. Bake until beef is just tender, stirring occasionally, about 1 hour. Add carrots and rutabagas. Cover; bake until vegetables are crisp-tender, about 30 minutes. Uncover; bake until beef is very tender, about 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, prepare dumplings:
  • Whisk milk and eggs in medium bowl to blend. Stir in chives and parsley. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Sift flour, baking powder and salt into large bowl. Add milk mixture. Stir just until blended.
  • Whisk remaining 1/2 cup canned beef broth and cornstarch in small bowl to blend. Bring stew to simmer over medium heat. Gradually stir cornstarch mixture into stew. Return stew to simmer, stirring until sauce thickens.
  • Spoon dumpling batter in 12 dollops atop simmering stew. Cover tightly; simmer until dumplings are puffed and tester inserted into center of dumplings comes out clean, about 15 minutes.
  • Serve stew with dumplings.

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

DUMPLINGS:

  • In a 5-qt. Dutch oven, brown beef in oil. Add onions; cook until onions are tender. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Stir in 3 cups water and all the seasonings. 4 pound shoulder roast of lamb
Olive oil
10 cloves of garlic
1/4 pound bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
4 cups veal stock
4 ounces unsalted butter
1/2 cup flour
1 cup onion, diced
1/2 cup celery, diced
1/2 cup carrot, diced
Fresh sprigs marjoram for garnish
2 cups flour
1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/4 cup soft goat cheese
2 teaspoons each of chopped parsley, marjoram and thyme
Freshly ground black pepper
3 cups veal stock

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  • Rub the lamb roast all over with olive oil. Make 10 small slits all over the roast. Insert the bacon and garlic cloves into the slits. Season with salt and pepper. Place the roast in a roasting pan and add the stock and cover. Place in the oven and slow roast for 3 hours, or until very, very tender. Remove the lamb from the oven and cut into 2-inch pieces. Set aside.
  • In a large pot, add the butter and melt. Stir in the flour and let cook for 3 minutes. Add the onion and saute until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the carrots and the celery and saute for another 10 minutes. Slowly whisk in the stock that the lamb was cooked in. Add the reserved lamb. Bring to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper.
  • For the dumplings: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt and mix well. In a small bowl, beat the eggs. Add the milk to the eggs. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix well. Stir in the goat cheese and the herbs. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Have the stock boiling in a small saucepan. Using 2 tablespoons, drop the dumpling batter into the boiling stock. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the dumplings float to the surface. Remove the dumplings from the stock and place on a plate.
  • To finish: Place the dumplings into the stew. Check for seasoning. Garnish with fresh marjoram.

Steps:

  • Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in the parsley, chives and pepper.

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 can (14.5 ounces) chicken broth
1 jar (15 ounces) salsa verde (2 cups)
1 can (5 ounces) evaporated milk
1 large rotisserie chicken, meat deboned and left in large chunks (about 6 cups)
Dumplings
1 cup whole milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups bleached all-purpose flour
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup thinly sliced scallion greens
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Steps:

  • DIRECTIONS: Chicken: Heat butter over medium-high heat in a large (11 - 12 inch), deep ovenproof skillet or 5-6 quart Dutch oven. Whisk in flour to make a paste. Mix broth, salsa verde, and evaporated milk and whisk in all at once. Whisk, vigorously at first, until mixture simmers and thickens to sauce consistency. Stir in chicken, heat through, and cover to keep warm. Meanwhile, adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. Dumplings: Heat milk and butter in a small saucepan until steamy. Mix flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, scallions, and cilantro in a medium bowl with a fork. Stir in milk mixture to form a smooth, firm dough. Pinch off Ping-Pong-ball-size peices of dough with your fingers and drop onto chicken mixture. Return chicken to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cover and transfer pan to oven and bake until dumplings are cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes. Serve.

Simple and easy to make these dumplings are "To Die For" if you love dumplings... Great with stews and soups, these are a "WINNER". This recipe was made many times by my gram, and we always enjoyed them... They are WONDERFUL! Great with my recipes for Recipe #218703 and Recipe #218699!

2 cups biscuit mix
1/8 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/8 teaspoon dried rosemary
2/3 cup milk

Steps:

  • Mix together.
  • Drop dumplings into the edge of the soup pan using a lg. tablespoon.
  • Cook dumplings in soup with the cover off for the first 10 mins., then cook with cover on for 10 minutes.

I just love dumplings. My DH, not as much..so if I cook them I have to eat them. So no photo for a while. I have tried a whole lot of recipes for dumplings and this is the one! I did tweak a few things. This can be used for a chicken or beef stew or soup. Allrecipes.com: ronnastefan

1 1/2 c flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp dried thyme (minced)
1/2 tsp dried parsley
1/2 tsp dried oregano
3 Tbsp butter (cold)
3/4 c milk (use buttermilk if you have extra)

Steps:

  • 1. In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and spices together with a wire whip.
  • 2. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • 3. Gradually add milk, using just enough to form a thick bater.
  • 4. Drop by rounded tablespoons into your simmering soup or stew. Cover and allow to cook for 15 minutes. NO PEEKING
