My mother, Thelma Neese Gwaltney, made the world's best apple crisp. It filled the kitchen with its cinnamon-y scent, telling me that night's dinner would be special. 5 c tart apples, cored, peeled and sliced thin
1/2 c quick cooking oats
1/2 c all purpose flour
1 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1 Tbsp white sugar
1/2 c butter, softened
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for topping, if desired

Steps:

  • 1. Spread the apples in a lightly greased (or sprayed) loaf pan.
  • 2. In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, oats, white sugar, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir until thoroughly incorporated.
  • 3. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  • 4. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are done.
