Side Essentials: Holiday Coleslaw image

Yes, I know that as of this writing, the Autumn/Winter holidays are in the rearview mirror, but I thought I would post this because the way this year is warping by, the holidays will be there before we know it. To be honest, this slaw is not just for the holidays, serve it all year long. So, you ready... Let's get into the kitchen.

PLAN/PURCHASE
THE DRESSING
3/4 cup(s) plain mayonnaise, i prefer duke's
3 tablespoon(s) fresh clover honey
1 teaspoon(s) dijon mustard, i prefer grey poupon
1 teaspoon(s) celery seeds
1/2 teaspoon(s) ginger powder
THE COLESLAW
14 ounce(s) cabbage/carrots mix, your favorite combo, 1 bag
1 medium apple, peeled, cored, and diced
1/2 cup(s) cranberries, dried variety
1/2 cup(s) walnuts, chopped

Steps:

  • PREP/PREPARE
  • Peeled apples are the type of fruit that will turn brown when exposed to air. The best way to prevent this from happening is to toss the diced apple in a teaspoon or two of lemon juice before adding to the salad.
  • Coleslaw Mixes Bagged coleslaw is one of the things that I do not mind buying. Mind you, I still wash it and spin dry before using. There are several types out there: Plain cabbage, or cabbage with other things, like carrots and the like. Choose what works best for you.
  • Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
  • In a small bowl, mix together all the dressing ingredients. In a large serving bowl combine the coleslaw ingredients. Add the dressing and toss to combine.
  • PLATE/PRESENT
  • Serve as a side at your next dinner party, you guests will say thank you. Enjoy.
  • Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
