How to make HOWARD JOHNSON'S BOSTON BROWN BREAD:

Number Of Ingredients 8

Serves/Makes: 1 loaf
Ingredients:
2 c. buttermilk
¾ c. molasses
1 c. rye flour (unsifted)
1 c. whole wheat flour (unsifted)
1 ½ Tsp. salt
1 ½ Tsp. baking soda

Steps:

  • Procedure:
  • Get a 2-quart mold. Grease the mold then flour it.
  • Mix corn meal, salt, flours and soda.
  • Add the buttermilk and molasses.
  • Turn the mixture into a mold then cover it very tightly.
  • Put the mold on a trivet in a deep kettle.
  • Put adequate boiling water to the kettle coming halfway up to the mold's sides. Then, cover it.
  • Allow it to steam for 3 and a half hours, or until they are done.
  • Remove the mixture from the mold then put it to a cake rack.
  • Serve it while it's hot. Put some baked beans as a side.
