1 tablespoon olive oil
4 carrots, coarsely grated (2 cups)
1 medium onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
Coarse salt and ground pepper
3 tablespoons tomato paste
3/4 pound ground turkey (93% lean, dark meat)
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons dark-brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
4 whole-wheat hamburger rolls, split

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium; add carrots, onion, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add turkey; cook, breaking up meat with a spoon, until no longer pink, 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Add tomatoes, sugar, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, 12 to 14 minutes. Serve on whole-wheat rolls.

A healthier twist on traditional sloppy joes, made with ground turkey and homemade sauce.

1 pound ground turkey
1 red bell pepper (diced)
1 red onion (diced)
3 Tablespoons brown sugar
3 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 Tablespoon steak seasoning
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
15 ounces tomato sauce (1 can)
6 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Brown ground turkey in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add pepper and onion and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar, vinegar, steak seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and tomato sauce.
  • Add sauce to skillet, reduce heat to medium and let simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes.
  • Serve warm on hamburger buns.

¼ cup vegetable oil
½ cup minced onion
2 (8 ounce) packages tempeh
½ cup minced green bell pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
¼ cup tomato sauce
1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon celery seed
¼ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground coriander
½ teaspoon dried thyme
½ teaspoon oregano
½ teaspoon paprika
1 pinch ground black pepper
hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a deep, 10-inch skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the onion in the oil until translucent. Crumble the tempeh into the skillet; cook and stir until golden brown. Add the green pepper and garlic; cook another 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, molasses, cayenne pepper, celery seed, cumin, salt, coriander, thyme, oregano, paprika, and black pepper; stir. Simmer another 10 to 15 minutes. Spoon hot onto hamburger buns to serve.

1 12-ounce package frozen veggie tots
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 small white onion, finely chopped
1 pound ground turkey
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon apple pie spice or ground cinnamon
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup chili sauce (such as Heinz)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
4 soft hamburger buns, lightly toasted
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425˚. Spread the tots on a baking sheet and bake until crisp, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add all but 1/4 cup white onion; cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the turkey, chili powder, pie spice, a big pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat, until the turkey is well browned, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce and 1/2 cup water; stir to combine. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer, stirring frequently, until the turkey is fully cooked and the sauce is thickened slightly, 3 to 5 minutes; season with salt and pepper.
  • Divide the turkey mixture among the bun bottoms. Sprinkle with the cheese, reserved chopped onion and the bun tops. Serve with the veggie tots.

Steps:

½ cup chopped onion
½ cup chopped green bell pepper

1 cup no-salt-added ketchup
7 tablespoons barbeque sauce
2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
1 tablespoon vinegar
½ teaspoon celery seed
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
8 hamburger bun, split and toasted

Steps:

  • Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat; cook and stir turkey, onion, bell pepper, and tomato until turkey is crumbly and no longer pink, about 5 minutes. Note: The no-salt-added items in this recipe can be replaced with their higher sodium counterparts--just add less additional salt.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb ground turkey (I use frozen, thawed)
1 yellow onion, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
2/3 cup frozen whole kernel corn
2/3 cup frozen green pea
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can no-salt-added diced tomatoes
1 (8 ounce) can no-salt-added tomato sauce
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon dijon-style mustard
1 teaspoon ground paprika
3/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
hot dog buns or bread

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat; add olive oil, ground turkey, chopped onion, chopped carrot, and frozen corn and peas. Cook until turkey has browned and vegetables are soft, stirring as necessary.
  • Mix in canned diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, white vinegar, lemon juice, worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, dijon-style mustard, ground paprika, and salt. Reduce heat and simmer (uncovered) until thick, about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
