This cookie recipe is adapted from my go-to peanut butter cookie recipe. I think I like it better sesame style with tahini!

½ cup unsalted butter
½ cup tahini
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup white sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup sesame seeds, or as needed
2 tablespoons honey, or as needed

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Cream butter, tahini, brown sugar, and white sugar together with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy. Pour in egg and almond extract; mix to combine.
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl. Mix into butter mixture until just combined.
  • Pour sesame seeds into a shallow bowl. Roll dough into walnut-sized balls. Roll balls in sesame seeds to lightly coat. Place on 2 ungreased cookie sheets; drizzle with honey.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until edges are golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Since I live in the South people refer to these cookies as Benne Wafers, they are actually Sesame Seed Cookies. Toasting benne (sesame) seeds develops their flavor and also gives these cookies a slightly crunchy texture.

1 cup sesame seeds
¾ cup butter, melted
1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking powder

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Place the benne (sesame) seeds on an ungreased baking sheet and toast for 10 to 12 minutes, until light brown. Watch closes so that they don 't burn.
  • In a large bowl mix the brown sugar, melted butter or margarine, egg, vanilla extract, flour, salt, baking powder and toasted sesame seeds together until combined.
  • Drop dough by 1/2 teaspoonfuls 1 1/2 inches apart onto a lightly greased baking sheet.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 4 to 6 minutes, until light brown. Let cookies cool for about 2 minutes before removing from baking sheets to a wire rack to cool completely. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container.

2 3/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 ounces butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 1/4 ounces sesame seeds, Toasted (about 1 cup)
2 ounces bittersweet baking chocolate, melted

Steps:

  • Mix flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt in medium bowl. Set aside. Beat butter in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy.
  • Add sugar; beat until well blended, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Gradually beat in flour mixture and 1/4 cup of the toasted sesame seed on low speed until well mixed.
  • Refrigerate dough 2 hours or until firm.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F
  • Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in remaining 3/4 cup toasted sesame seed.
  • Place 2 inches apart on silpat lined sheet.
  • Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on baking sheets 1 minute. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.
  • Drizzle cookies with melted chocolate. Let stand until chocolate is set.

GOLDEN SESAME COOKIES

A light sugar cookie with toasted sesame seeds. To make a double batch, I double all the ingredients but the butter and they still taste delicious.

½ cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup sesame seeds, toasted

Steps:

  • To Toast Sesame Seeds: Pour seeds into a pie pan and place in a 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) oven for about 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Stir seeds occasionally.
  • Cream the butter or margarine with the vanilla until light and fluffy. Add the confectioners' sugar gradually, beating until fluffy. Add egg and beat thoroughly.
  • Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together. Add in thirds to the creamed mixture. After each addition of the flour mixture stir in the toasted sesame seeds. Mix until blended. Cover and chill dough for at least 2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll 1/3 of the dough at a time to 1/8 inch thick. Cut with a 2 inch scalloped cutter. Transfer cookies to ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 10 to 12 minutes.

2 cups packed brown sugar
1 egg

In South Carolina and Georgia, these popular cookies are known as "benne wafers," taking their name from the West African word for sesame.

Yield Makes about 48 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup packed light-brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup hulled sesame seeds, toasted

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line four baking sheets with parchment paper, and set aside. Sift together flour, salt, and baking soda, and set aside.
  • In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla, and beat until combined. Add reserved flour mixture, and beat until combined. Add toasted sesame seeds, and beat until incorporated.
  • Using a spoon, drop cookie batter, about 1 tablespoon at a time, onto prepared baking sheets, allowing at least 2 inches between cookies for spreading.
  • Bake until golden, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from oven, and cool on a wire rack.
