TEXAS TRASH

This is a wonderful snack mix I make each holiday season. Athough this recipe makes up a good-sized batch, it never seems to last long! Any time we are invited to a Christmas gathering, I always bring along at least a 2 gallon baggie filled up with this mix. The quantities I list here are approximate. You may add more of one...

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 c butter or margarine, melted
2 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
3 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
3 c chex cereal (use rice, wheat & corn chex or only one kind)
1 1/2 c mixed salted nuts
1 c mini pretzels or pretzel sticks
1 1/4 c goldfish crackers or oyster crackers
1 1/2 c shoestring potatoes
1 c cheerios (the original kind)
optional: a few sprinkles of cayenne pepper added to the butter mixture (go easy!! not too much!)

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 250 degees. You will need a VERY LARGE bowl or tub to mix this in. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine butter or margarine, seasoned salt, garlic powder & Worcestershire Sauce. Heat to melt butter and blend together the flavors. (At this point, you may add cayenne pepper if desired, but BE CAREFUL!! A little bit goes a long way... Maybe no more than 1 1/2 tsp) I don't recommend cayenne if kids are eating this. They will get it on their fingers and then in their eyes. Safety first!!!
  • 2. In a VERY large bowl or tub, combine all of the dry ingredients together and blend well using your hands. It works better this way. Now dribble gently the butter mixture onto the dry mixture and using a slotted spoon, keep stirring it until evenly coated. Use all of the butter mixture.
  • 3. Using 2 very large cookie sheets (may need 3), spray them with nonstick spray. Spread the mixture evenly on the cookie sheets and bake on low heat (250 degrees) for 25 minutes, stirring twice during baking. Remove from oven, cool in the pans about 10 minutes, then store the mixture in Gallon sized (or larger if you can get them) freezer bags. I promise you...it won't last very long. It's that good!

SLOW COOKER TEXAS TRASH PARTY MIX

Slow Cooker Texas Trash Party Mix image

Ever since I can remember my mother made Texas Trash/Party Mix. I know she found the original recipe on the box of Chex Cereal as I have used it also. It was a snack we all enjoyed year round but especially during the holidays. She always made it as directed and I would pick out the chex cereals as my favorite. I don't know...

TEXAS TRASH

Not your ordinary snack mix! A BIG, BOLD FLAVOR just like the State of Texas! This can be doubled, tripled or quadrupled successfully. You can also add other ingredients, just keep the proportion of spicy butter to the dry ingredients the same as in the recipe. I usually add goldfish crackers to mine.

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 (14 ounce) package bite-size corn square cereal (such as Corn Chex®)
1 (14 ounce) package crispy rice cereal squares (such as Rice Chex ®)
1 (14 ounce) package bite-size wheat square cereal (such as Wheat Chex®)
1 (8.9 ounce) box toasted oat cereal rings (such as Cheerios®)
3 cups salted mixed nuts
1 (15 ounce) package mini pretzel twists
2 (6 ounce) packages goldfish crackers
1 (12 ounce) package sesame snack sticks
1 cup warm (liquid) bacon drippings
1 cup unsalted butter, melted
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons monosodium glutamate (MSG)
2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
4 teaspoons seasoned salt
4 teaspoons chili powder
4 teaspoons garlic powder
4 teaspoons hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).
  • Gently mix corn, rice, and wheat squares, oat rings, mixed nuts, mini pretzels, goldfish crackers, and sesame snacks in two 13x24-inch aluminum roasting pans, taking care not to break cereal.
  • Stir bacon drippings, unsalted butter, Worcestershire sauce, MSG, liquid smoke, cayenne pepper, seasoned salt, chili powder, garlic powder, and hot pepper sauce together in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook on high in microwave for 3 or 4 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until mixture is warm, liquid, and fully combined.
  • Stir seasoning sauce continuously as you pour half over the cereal mixture in each pan. Gently stir the snack mix and seasonings with a slotted spoon until thoroughly coated; do not crush cereal.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until sauce is completely absorbed and the snack mix is crisp, about 2 hours; stir gently every 15 minutes. Cool completely and store in airtight containers. The snack mix stores well in freezer in airtight freezer bags, if it makes it that long.
