Polynesian Sweet and Sour Hot Dogs with Rice image

Hot dogs are the unsung heroes of dinnertime, and here's another recipe that proves it! Toss pineapple pieces, bits of bell pepper and sliced hot dogs in a homemade sweet and sour sauce, then serve over rice for a dinner that's fast, cheap and supremely satisfying.

1 can (20 oz) pineapple chunks in juice
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 package (16 oz) hot dogs, sliced on the diagonal into 1 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 large green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 1 cup)
1/2 large red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 1 cup)
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
8 cups hot cooked white rice

Steps:

  • Drain pineapple chunks; reserve juice. In medium bowl, stir juice with brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce and garlic powder.
  • In 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Cook hot dogs in oil 3 to 4 minutes, stirring frequently, until lightly browned. Remove from skillet.
  • Add pineapple juice mixture, drained pineapple chunks and chopped bell peppers to hot skillet. Heat to boiling; reduce heat to medium-low. Cook uncovered 5 to 6 minutes to reduce mixture slightly.
  • In small bowl, beat cornstarch and water with whisk. Add to skillet; stir constantly until mixture is thick and bubbling. Add hot dogs back into skillet and cook 4 to 5 minutes or until heated through. Serve over hot rice.

I know, I know. This sounds like a silly recipe for someone who doesn't know anything about cooking or food. BUT I got this recipe from a friend. She was serving it at an open house and everyone LOVED them and wanted more. Its just too easy.

1 jar(s) (6 ounces) yellow mustard
1 jar(s) (10 ounces) currant jelly
2 lb good quality hot dogs

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together mustard and jelly. Heat gradually while stirring to mix completely.
  • 2. Cook hot dogs in water. Slice hot dogs into 4-6 pieces each. Add hot dog pieces to sauce and cook on warm for 10-15 minutes. Serve hot as an appetizer.

1 cup catsup
1 cup grape jelly
3 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
2 (16 ounce) packages cocktail franks or 2 (16 ounce) packages hot dogs

Steps:

  • If using full-sized dog/franks, cut them into one-inch pieces.
  • Over low heat, simmer catsup, jelly, lemon juice, and mustard together for about 3 minutes, stirring to mix well.
  • Add"dogs" (whatever meat you select) and pineapple chunks and continue to simmer for about 15 minutes, or until"dogs" are hot.
  • To serve, pour mixture into fondue pot or chafing dish to keep it hot during party serving period.
  • Serve with toothpicks for spearing these tasty morsels.
  • NOTE: Any dogs and sauce left in the cooking pot (not served) can be frozen to use for another party!
  • VARIATION: This sauce is also delicious with meatballs.

1/2 cup yellow mustard
1 -1 1/2 lb hot dog (you might be able to use 2 pounds)

  • In a saucepan, put the jelly and mustard on a low heat till it is melted and mixed well.
  • Cook the hot dogs and if using regular size ones--slice into pieces and add to the mixture; if using mini hot dog cook a few minutes and use whole.

2 pounds ground beef
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1 cup water
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1/2 cup sweet pickle relish
1/4 cup dried minced onion
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Hot dogs and buns
Optional: Diced onion, sliced pickles and shredded cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink, 8-10 minutes, breaking into crumbles; drain. Stir in tomato paste; cook and stir 3 minutes. Stir in next 13 ingredients. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, until thickened, 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve sauce over hot dogs in buns. Add optional toppings as desired., Freeze option: Freeze cooled sauce in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. 1 beef flank steak, (1 pound)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon cold water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 medium onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 can (8 ounces) pineapple chunks in juice, undrained
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 medium bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 medium tomatoes, each cut into 8 wedges
Hot cooked rice, if desired

Steps:

  • Remove fat from beef. Cut beef with grain into 2-inch strips; cut strips across grain into 1/8-inch slices. Mix cornstarch and cold water.
  • Heat wok or 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil; rotate wok to coat side. Add beef and onion; stir-fry about 3 minutes or until beef is brown. Stir in pineapple, sugar, vinegar, bouillon granules and soy sauce. Heat to boiling. Stir in cornstarch mixture; cook and stir 1 minute.
  • Stir in bell pepper and tomatoes; cook and stir 1 minute. Serve with rice.
