Funny how things can take you back to your childhood. This was one of my favorite lunches in school. Everyone loved them. You may have even had them at your school. My friends mom worked in the cafeteria and shared many of their recipes. Now I make them for my kids and they love them too. They are even better the next day, once they mingle in the sauce over night. These are great for parties and kept warm in a crock pot. Enjoy!

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound(s) franks
1/4 cup(s) sweet relish
1/2 cup(s) onion, minced
1 can(s) tomato soup
1 tablespoon(s) each - vinegar, worcestershire sauce
1/2 tablespoon(s) brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon(s) chili powder
- hot dog buns

Steps:

  • Saute onions, until translucent and browning a little. Add all remaining ingredients, combine well and simmer for a few minutes.
  • Fry or boil your hotdogs. I like mine fried.
  • Pour sauce over dogs and simmer for 10 minutes. Moving hot dogs around to thoroughly coat with sauce.
  • Place hot dogs in warmed buns and drizzle a little extra sauce over the hot dog...can add raw diced onion in prefer. That's how I like mine. The longer these soak in the sauce the better...make them ahead and heat back up, that's when they're best.

SCHOOL CAFETERIA SPAGHETTI

School Cafeteria Spaghetti image

There were only two things that created a buzz around school when I was growing up: upcoming teacher workdays and spaghetti day in the cafeteria. School spaghetti was one of my favorite dishes then, and it still is now! Try this simple, yet more grownup, version.

cooking spray
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
½ green bell pepper, chopped
1 envelope dry Italian salad dressing mix (such as Good Seasons®)
1 ½ pounds ground beef
1 (26 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
1 (16 ounce) package spaghetti
4 cups grated sharp Cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
  • Heat oil in a wide pan over medium-high heat. Saute onion and bell pepper in the hot oil until soft, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Mix Italian dressing mix into ground beef and add to the hot pan; saute until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain. Add spaghetti sauce and simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook spaghetti in the boiling water, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 12 minutes. Drain and add beef mixture; mix well. Transfer to the prepared casserole dish and top with Cheddar cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is browned, about 10 minutes.
