Delicious pan seared ground beef oval patties cooked in a mushroom onion brown gravy that tastes incredibly delicious. A family favorite.

2 lbs ground beef
1/3 cup onions (chopped)
1 egg
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp parsley
1 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp crushed red peppers
4 cups beef broth
3 Tbsp flour
2 cups onions, (chopped)
3 cloves garlic, (minced)
8 oz mushrooms, (sliced)
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Steps:

  • In a medium mixing bowl, mix ground beef, onions, egg, bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, crushed red peppers and pepper together. Divide into equal amounts and shape into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick. Should get 5 or 6.
  • Heat a cast iron pan or large frying pan over medium high heat and cooked each patty for about 4-5 minutes on each side.
  • Once cooked on both sides, remove from the pan and place on a plate.
  • Reduce heat to medium, add onions and garlic to the pan along with the steak drippings. Cook for 3-4 minutes. Stir in mushrooms and continue cooking for another few minutes.
  • Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions, stir and cook for another minute or so.
  • Next, add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Stir for a few minutes and place the Salisbury steaks back into the pan and cover with the gravy mixture.
  • Cover pan and cook for about 20-30 minutes gently stirring occasionally. The gravy will also thicken up as it cools so make sure not to cook it too long or your gravy will be too thick. If that happens, just add a little more beef broth to thin it out.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes with a delicious vegetable.
  • Enjoy!
  • *And if the gravy seems to thin, mix 1 tsp corn starch with 1/8 cup water, then add to pan, stir and let simmer for a few more minutes.

1/2 onion ((white, brown or yellow))
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs ((or 1/3 cup ordinary breadcrumbs))
1 lb/500g ground beef (mince)
1 garlic clove (, minced)
1 egg
2 tbsp ketchup
1 beef bouillon cube (, crumbled)
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
3 tsp dijon mustard (OR 2 tsp dry mustard powder)
1 tbsp olive oil
2 garlic cloves (, minced)
1/2 onion (, finely chopped)
5 oz/150g mushrooms (, sliced)
2 tbsp unsalted butter
3 tbsp (35g) flour ((all purpose / plain))
2 cups (500 ml) beef broth / stock
1 cup (250 ml) water
2 tsp dijon mustard
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Place breadcrumbs in a bowl. Use a box grater and grate the onion over the breadcrumbs. Mix with fingers, leave to soak for a few minutes.
  • Add remaining Salisbury Steak ingredients into the large bowl. Use your hands to mix until just combined. Mix well for a couple of minutes until the mixture becomes a bit "pasty" which will ensure your patties hold together well.
  • Divide into 5 and pat firmly into oval patties around 3/4" / 1 2/3 cm thick.
  • Heat oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the steaks and cook the first side for 1 minute or until browned, then flip and brown the other side (they will still be raw inside). Remove onto plate.
  • If skillet is looking dry, add a touch more oil. Add chopped onion and garlic and cook for 2 minute until onions are a bit translucent.
  • Add the mushrooms into the skillet and cook for 2 - 3 minutes until golden.
  • Turn heat down to medium. Add butter. Once melted, add flour and cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
  • Gradually add in beef broth, stirring as you go. Once mostly lump free, whisk in remaining Gravy ingredients.
  • Add steaks along with the juices on the plate. Cook for 5 - 7 minutes, or until gravy is thickened, stirring occasionally around the steaks. If the gravy thickens too quickly, add more water.
  • Remove steaks onto a plate. Taste gravy and adjust salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve salisbury steaks topped with the mushroom gravy - over mashed potato is ideal! Sprinkle with a bit of parsley if desired.

1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder

lots fresh ground black pepper (, to taste)
1 Tablespoon cooking oil (, for searing beef patties)
8 ounces mushrooms (, sliced)
1 medium onion (, sliced)
3 Tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic (, minced or crushed)
1/4-1/2 cup flour (, depending on how thick you like your gravy)
3 cups broth ((beef, chicken or vegetable))
kosher salt (, to taste)

Steps:

  • In large bowl mix together all the steak ingredients (beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic salt, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper). Shape into 4 oval patties.
  • Heat large pan over medium-high heat and then add oil. Brown both sides of patties (about 1 minute per side) and then remove from the pan.
  • Keep same pan and beef juices over medium high heat. Add the mushrooms and onion and cook until onions are golden and excess mushroom liquid evaporates, about 10 minutes.
  • Add butter and garlic to the mushrooms and onions. Cook for about 1 minute.
  • Stir in the flour, cooking and stirring to remove lumps. Add about 1/2 - 1 cup of beef stock, whisking until incorporated.
  • Increase heat to High. Slowly pour in the remaining broth and whisk until well combined. Season with salt and pepper, to taste (the saltiness and flavors will concentrate some when it reduces down).
  • Once gravy starts to boil, reduce heat to low. Stirring often, simmer until the gravy starts to thicken, about 5-10 minutes. Add salisbury steak patties back into the gravy and cook until the steak patties are cooked to your preferred doneness (usually about 5-10 minutes), stirring the gravy occasionally around the steaks. Taste for seasoning and add more salt & pepper, if desired.
  • Serve the steaks topped with the mushroom sauce. They are excellent over rice, pasta or mashed potatoes!

⅓ cup dry bread crumbs
¼ cup chopped onions
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons water

Steps:

  • Combine ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, and black pepper in a bowl until evenly mixed. Shape beef mixture into 4 patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
  • Fry patties in a large skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides, about 10 minutes. Add beef broth, onion, and mushrooms; bring to a boil. Steak Patties:
3 lbs ground beef
2 packages powdered onion soup mix (such as Lipton brand)
2 egg yolks
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Mushroom Gravy:
1/2 stick butter
1 lb button mushrooms
1/2 stick butter
3 tbsp flour
2 cups beef stock
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt & pepper to taste
Caramelized Onions:
3 yellow onions
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp white or red wine, vegetable or chicken stock, balsamic vinegar, or water
Salt to taste

Steps:

  • Start by getting the onions caramelizing: Trim the tip and root from the onions, cut them in half and remove the skins. Slice the onion from root to stem into thin slices. Place a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Add all the onions to the pan and stir them gently to coat with butter. Cook the onions over the medium heat until caramelized to your liking (usually 30 minutes or so) stirring them every 5-10 minutes. When the onions have finished cooking, pour 1/4 cup wine, broth, balsamic vinegar, or water into the pan and scrape up any drippings and stir it into the onions. Salt the onions to taste. Make the mushroom gravy: Melt ½ stick of butter in a deep skillet and add the mushrooms. Coat the mushrooms in the butter and cook them down over medium-high heat until they are soft and golden. Salt and pepper them to taste and remove from the pan. In the same pan, add the other ½ stick of butter and let it melt over the medium-high heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk together until a loose paste forms. Cook off the flour flavor for 1 minute. Add the beef stock, heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce to the pan and whisk to incorporate the butter/flour mixture (roux). Raise the heat a tad and continue whisking until the sauce is thickened, about 5-6 minutes. Add the mushrooms and salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and keep warm, stirring occasionally. Make the steak patties: Preheat the broiler to 500 degrees. Combine the ground beef, onion soup mix, egg yolks and Worcestershire sauce in a large bowl until all ingredients are mixed together very well. Form into patties about 1 inch thick. Place the patties on a broiler pan and broil them close to the heat source for 5-6 minutes per side for a medium cooked temperature. To serve: Place a steak patty on the plate and top with the mushroom gravy followed by a scoop of the caramelized onions. I like to serve these with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans almondine. 1 pound ground beef
1/3 cup bread crumbs
2 teaspoons ketchup
1 teaspoon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional, use if not doing onion in gravy)
1 onion (small)
1 teaspoon oil
2 cups beef broth
4 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon ketchup
1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • If you want caramelized onions in your gravy, start by thin slicing a small onion. Cook with 1 teaspoon oil over medium-high heat until nicely brown. About 7-8 minutes. You can cook the optional mushrooms instead or in addition with the onions. Set aside in a bowl.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef with 1/3 cup breadcrumbs, 2 teaspoons ketchup, 1 teaspoon mustard and Worcestershire sauce, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. If not doing the onions, then add 1/2 teaspoon onion powder.
  • Divide the hamburger mixture into 3-4 equal portions. A quarter-size indent in the middle of one side to prevent puffing up of the patties and make cooking evener.
  • Place steak patties in a large frying pan with a teaspoon of oil over medium-high heat. Flip about every 5-6 minutes until an internal temperature of 165°. About 15-20 minutes depending on the thickness, the pan, and your burners.
  • Whisk 4 tablespoons flour with 1 cup beef broth. Remove the Salisbury steak to a plate and lightly tent. Pour out most of the liquid, leaving about 3-4 tablespoons of liquid. Allow the pan to cool some. Add 1 cup beef broth and bring to a light boil over medium heat.
  • Slowly add the flour-broth mixture while continuing to whisk. Add 1 teaspoon ketchup and 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Whisk until nicely thickened, a few minutes. If using the caramelized onions or mushrooms, add them to the gravy and mix well.
  • Add steak back into the mixture, simmer for a few minutes until everything is hot.

1/4 cup cracker crumb
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 1/2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
1 teaspoon salt

1 medium onion, sliced, into, rings
8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
salt

1 large red onions, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth

1/2 cup bread crumbs
1 egg yolk

  • Directions: 1) To make gravy: Heat butter in a large sauté pan. Add onions and cook over medium-high heat, until onions start to brown, stirring occasionally. When onions are slightly softened and turning a deep honey brown, add 1/4 cup broth. Reduce heat, cover and continue cooking, adding more broth as needed to prevent caramelized bits at the bottom of the pan from burning. It should take at least 25 to 30 minutes to properly caramelize onions. Stir in flour and cook for about 2 minutes. Add wine and reduce by half. Stir in remaining beef broth.Simmer for 10 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and keep warm. 2) To make patties: Mix ground beef,bread crumbs, egg yolk, salt, pepper, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, parsley and thyme in a bowl. Shape into 4 oval patties about 3/4-inch thick. Heat olive oil in a large nonstick skillet set over medium-high heat. Sear patties about 3 minutes per side, or until a brown crust forms.
