Call upon chocolate-loving kids to shape the cookie dough for these cocoa-flavored treats. For a more festive presentation, use red and green sprinkles instead of chocolate-flavor ones called for in the recipe.

1 16.5 ounce package refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough
⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
⅔ cup chocolate-flavor sprinkles
2 tablespoons milk
About 40 dark chocolate kisses, unwrapped

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease a cookie sheet; set aside. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine cookie dough and cocoa powder. Seal bag; knead with your hands until dough is well mixed. Remove dough from bag.
  • Place chocolate sprinkles in a shallow dish or small bowl. Place milk in another shallow dish or small bowl. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Dip balls in milk to moisten, then roll in chocolate sprinkles to coat. Place balls 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven about 8 minutes or until edges are firm. Immediately press a chocolate kiss into the center of each cookie. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; let cool. Makes about 40 cookies.

4 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
½ cup vegetable shortening
2 cups white sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
⅛ teaspoon salt
½ cup chopped walnuts
¾ cup confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Melt the chocolate and shortening in a saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and mix in sugar and vanilla. Beat in eggs 1 at a time. In a bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in the chocolate mixture and nuts. Chill dough in the refrigerator 3 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  • Place confectioners' sugar in a bowl. Roll dough into 1 inch balls. Roll dough balls in confectioners' sugar to coat. Arrange 3 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets.
  • Bake 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven. The cookies will look soft when removed from the oven. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Enjoy!

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp orange zest
1 1/2 cups flour (sometimes I do half or all whole-wheat flour)
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3 cups oatmeal
1 pkg chocolate chips (or 2 cups good dark chocolate chunks)
1 cup toasted almonds or pecans (or more, to taste)
as much as you desire of any combination of:
dried cranberries
dried apricots, chopped
golden raisins
dried cherries

Steps:

  • Oven to 375º. Cream butter and sugar. Mix in vanilla, egg, orange zest and salt. Add flour, baking soda and oatmeal until blended. Add chocolate, nuts, and dried fruit. Drop spoonfuls on to an un-greased cookie sheet and bake for about 10-12 minutes.
