We don't eat red meat very often in our house, but every once in a while someone gets a craving for a hearty beef stew and some crusty Sourdough bread. This is my standby recipe.

1 1/4 lbs sirloin tip roast, cubed
2 large potatoes, cubed
3 carrots, sliced
1 onion, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup flour
1 tablespoon olive oil
salt and pepper
3 (16 ounce) cans broth

Steps:

  • In a medium mixing bowl put flour and teaspoon each salt and pepper, mix.
  • Toss the beef cubes in the flour until coated.
  • In a soup pot heat the olive oil over medium high heat until the oil blooms.
  • Reserving the extra flour in the bowl, add the meat to the soup pot and cook until the meat is browned on all sides.
  • Add carrot, onion, and potatoes to pot sprinkling the remaining flour over the veggies to coat.
  • Mix the meat, veggies, and flour thoroughly and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until veggies start to soften.
  • Add all three tins of beef broth and bring to a boil.
  • Boil until veggies are tender, add the worcestershire sauce, season to taste with salt and pepper.

My grandma Lorraine Stromgren would listen to WCCO Radio's Joyce Lamont as she broadcasted a daily recipe. My grandma would sit by the radio with pencil in hand to write down those recipe favorites! A cookbook was published in 1979 after 10 years of recipes being broadcasted. Of over 2,000 recipes that had been broadcasted, the cookbook has the recipes that were the listeners' favorites.

1 1/2 lbs beef cube steaks (about 4 steaks)
1/2 cup flour
2 tablespoons oil
1 cup beef broth (make with hot water and bouillon cube)
2 cups diced potatoes
2 cups sliced carrots
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup sliced celery
1 cup frozen green peas or 1 cup frozen green beans
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Cut minute steaks into half inch strips, sprinkle them with flour and brown them in oil in a skillet.
  • Put the browned meat in a 2 1/2 quart casserole with the beef broth, diced potatoes, sliced carrots, chopped onions, sliced celery, peas, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and Worcestershire sauce- Mix well.
  • Cover the casserole tightly and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, in a 350 degree oven.

5 medium red potatoes, cubed
2 cups water
2 pounds ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 package (16 ounces) frozen mixed vegetables
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes and green chilies, undrained
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Steps:

  • Place the potatoes and water in a microwave-safe dish; microwave on high until almost tender, about 7-9 minutes. Set aside (do not drain). , In a 3-qt. microwave-safe dish, cook beef and onion on medium until beef is browned, about 8 minutes; drain. Add potatoes and remaining ingredients. Cover and microwave on medium for 12 minutes or until potatoes are tender and vegetables are heated through.

1 medium onion, chopped
1 pound lean ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
1 pinch ground black pepper to taste
4 cups coarsely shredded cabbage
1 (12 ounce) can tomato-vegetable juice cocktail (such as V8®)
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
½ teaspoon dried marjoram

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and saute until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Add beef, salt, and pepper; cook and stir until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. 400 ml beef stock
3 sticks celery, sliced
400 g diced tomatoes (1 can)
125 g corn kernels (1 small can)

  • Brown beef in frying pan, drain.
  • Combine with all other ingredients in slow cooker/crockpot, or cook in large pot on stove.
  • For slow cooker, cook on Low for 5-7 hours. For stovetop, simmer on low heat for 1-2 hours.

1 head cauliflower, (2 to 2 1/4 pounds), trimmed and broken into large florets
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 1/2 pounds trimmed rib-eye or sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
Coarse salt and ground pepper
6 cloves garlic, sliced
2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary
1 1/2 pounds mixed fresh mushrooms, (such as button, cremini, and stemmed shiitake), halved or quartered
1 cup dry red wine
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Place cauliflower in a large saucepan with 1 inch of water. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium. Simmer, covered, until very tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat oil in a large skillet over high heat. Season beef generously with salt and pepper. Cook, turning, until browned, 5 to 7 minutes; transfer to a plate.
  • Reduce heat to medium. Add garlic and rosemary to skillet; cook, stirring, just until fragrant (garlic will color quickly), about 1 minute. Add mushrooms, wine, and vinegar; cover, and cook until mushrooms release their liquid, about 5 minutes. Remove lid; simmer until mushrooms are tender but mixture is still saucy, 3 to 5 minutes more. Return beef; cook until heated through.
  • Meanwhile, with a slotted spoon, transfer cauliflower to a food processor; add Parmesan, butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Process until very smooth. Spoon into shallow bowls and top with beef stew.

1 1/2 lbs sirloin steaks, tips trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
salt
pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 carrots, peeled and sliced 1/2 inch thick
2 parsnips, peeled and sliced 1/2 inch thick
1 cup frozen pearl onions, thawed
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
3/4 cup Guinness stout

Steps:

  • Pat steak dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper.
  • Heat oil in Dutch oven over med-high heat until just smoking.
  • Cook beef until well browned all over, 6-8 minutes.
  • Transfer to plate.
  • Melt butter in now-empty pot.
  • Add carrots, parsnips, onions, and 1/2 teaspoon salt and cook until browned, 6-8 minutes.
  • Stir in flour and cook until golden, about 1 minute.
  • Add broth, beer, and beef, along with any accumulated juices, and bring to boil.
  • Decrease heat to med-low and simmer, covered, until beef and vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes.
  • Serve.
