SWEET POTATO CHEWS FOR DOGS

Sweet Potato Chews for Dogs image

One of my coworkers made these for her Yorkie who just loves them as does my dog, Popcorn. Sweet potatoes are popular in the islands of the Pacific Ocean, spreading from Polynesia to Japan and the Philippines. I wonder whether dogs in those countries have sampled this little treat.

Time 3h5m

Yield 1 yam

Number Of Ingredients 1

1 raw sweet potato or 1 yam

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 250°F.
  • Wash the sweet potato or yam (the very orange type).
  • Cut down the middle lengthwise.
  • Then cut long lengthwise slices about 1/3 of an inch wide and place on a cookie sheet in a single layer.
  • Bake in oven at 250 F for about 3 hours.
  • This leaves them kind of chewy but you could also bake them a little longer to get them crunchy.

POTATO DOGS

Potato Dogs image

This twist on a corn dog uses Idaho® Russet Potatoes instead of a cornbread batter as the breading for a hot dog. The use of potatoes makes this recipe delightfully crisp on the outside and creamy and light on the inside.

Provided by Idaho® Potatoes

Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Sandwich Recipes     Hot Dogs and Corn Dogs Recipes

Time 1h40m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 16

¼ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons mustard
2 tablespoons sambal chili paste
1 tablespoon sweet relish
1 tablespoon ketchup
3 large Idaho® Russet Potatoes
olive oil
salt
¼ cup chopped scallions
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 large egg
½ cup breadcrumbs
¼ cup sour cream
8 to 10 popsicle sticks
4 hot dogs, cut in half
3 tablespoons vegetable oil

Steps:

  • To make the sauce, mix the mayo, mustard, chili paste, relish, and ketchup in a small bowl. Set aside in the fridge until ready to use.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Using a fork, poke a few holes into each Idaho® Russet Potato. Rub each potato with olive oil and salt and place on a baking sheet. Bake the potatoes for about 1 hour, until tender.
  • Peel the potatoes and run them through a potato ricer into a large bowl. Add the scallions, Parmesan, egg, and breadcrumbs. Stir well to combine. Add the sour cream, starting with about half, and stir to combine. Add more as needed until the mixture is smooth, but not too wet. It should be stiffer than mashed potatoes.
  • One by one, stick a popsicle stick into a hot dog starting at the cut end and putting it about 3/4 of the way through the dog. Take about 1/4 cup of the potato mixture in your hand and press it flat into your palm. Wrap it around the hot dog, adding more as needed. Press to tightly seal. Repeat until you run out of the potato mixture or the hot dogs.
  • Heat about 3 tablespoons vegetable oil in a heavy bottom pot to 375 degrees F. Working in batches, fry the potato dogs, flipping a few times to evenly brown on all sides. Remove from oil to a drying rack or paper towel and season with a pinch of salt.
  • Serve the potato dogs with the sauce on the side, or drizzled on top if desired.

sweet potatoes, whatever amount you would like
cinnamon or ginger
mylar bags and oxygen absorbers

Steps:

  • 1. "Dehydrated sweet potatoes make great homemade dog treats. Used as a safe and healthy alternative to rawhides, dried sweet potatoes are also cheaper. With a food dehydrator, these tasty treats are simple to make and your four-legged friend will love them. You can also dehydrate sweet potatoes by baking the sweet potato chips at a low temperature for a few hours. Sweet potatoes have a number of nutrients and vitamins that are good for dogs, as well as humans." Statement by Erin Whitney-Chavez
  • 2. Peel and wash the sweet potatoes. Be sure to remove any eyes or green parts of the potato you find.
  • 3. Slice your sweet potatoes as thin as you would like not exceeding 1/4 inch. If you are making chips for a dog treat, you want the slices to be as thin as possible. If you are making chews to replace rawhides, you want the slices to be a little thicker.
  • 4. Place your sweet potato slices on a cookie sheet. If you have a food dehydrator, place the slices on the dehydrating trays. Try to leave space between the slices so that the edges can dry completely.
  • 5. Season your sweet potato slices as you would like. Dogs usually do not need any additional spices for their sweet potatoes but you can sprinkle cinnamon or ginger for added taste. Both cinnamon and ginger are very good for dogs.
  • 6. Bake or dehydrate the sweet potato slices. If you have a food dehydrator, the slices will take about 12-14 hours to completely dry out. If you are using your oven, preheat to 135 degrees. Bake sweet potatoes for 6 to 12 hours. Check the potatoes to find your desired crispiness.
  • 7. Store in small Mylar Bags or jars, sealing properly. Don't forget to add to each bag, Oxygen Absorbers. You can use large Mylar bags, simply cut to size. If there is any product left, keep the oxygen absorber in bag and close tightly even if you cannot seal. Label
