JET SWIRL PIZZA APPETIZERS

Similar to meat-filled calzones, these cheesy little swirls were invented during football season. The name was inspired by our favorite team.

1 (10 ounce) can refrigerated pizza crust dough
¼ pound Genoa salami, thinly sliced
¼ pound pepperoni sausage, sliced
¼ pound provolone cheese, sliced
½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  • Roll pizza crust dough into an approximately 10x14 inch rectangle on the baking sheet. Layer with Genoa salami, pepperoni and provolone cheese. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese to within 1/2 inch from edges of the dough. Roll jelly roll style. Seal the edge with a fork.
  • Bake in the preheated oven 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Slice into 1 inch pieces to serve.

One of my favorite pizza recipes for appetizers, or you may add a tossed salad and you're set for a gourmet lunch with wine. If you make your own pizza dough, add 1 cup of whole wheat flour to replace 1 cup of all-purpose flour in the recipe. Makes a healthy and tasty pizza dough.

1 (14 ounce) package refrigerated pizza dough
1 tablespoon olive oil, or as needed
1 pound fresh spinach
1 (7 ounce) container pesto
½ pound crumbled Gorgonzola cheese
1 cup pitted Kalamata olives, sliced
1 small sweet onion, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Roll out pizza dough and cut out circles about 3-inches in diameter. Place mini crusts on a baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until slightly golden, about 5 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir spinach in the hot oil until cooked down and softened, 5 to 7 minutes. Let cool for about 5 minutes; remove most of the liquid by squeezing.
  • Cover mini pizza crusts lightly with pesto, leaving a small, plain border. Top each with sauteed spinach, Gorgonzola cheese, olives, and onion slices.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until cheese melts, about 5 minutes.

1 pizza crust dough, homemade or store bought (for these, prepared pizza crust located in the refrigerated area works well.)
1 can of pizza sauce, or your own homemade
1 bag of shredded mozzarella
assorted pizza toppings, such as sausage, pepperoni, green and red pepper, red onion, olives, mushrooms, yellow banana pepper rings, etc. chopped fairly small

Steps:

  • 1. Roll out your dough, as for pizza, on a lightly floured surface. Cut into desired Christmas cookie cutter shapes. If serving as appetizers, don't make them too large. If you want to make these for a cute lunch, larger is fine.
  • 2. Transfer to prepared cookie sheet. Add sauce, then cheese, then toppings, as for pizza.
  • 3. Bake at 350 degrees until crust is golden and cheese has melted and is bubbly. Make enough... they will go very quickly!

1/2 tsp. each garlic powder and dried oregano leaves
3 pocket pita breads (6 inch), cut horizontally in half
1 pkg. (8 oz.) KRAFT Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400ºF.
  • Cook sausage and vegetables in large skillet on medium heat until sausage is done, stirring occasionally. Drain; return sausage mixture to skillet. Add pizza sauce, VELVEETA and seasonings; mix well. Cook 5 min. or until VELVEETA is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring occasionally.

My hubby loves these, but I have done my best to make them a bit more healthy with maintaining that yumminess of the traditional party pizza. What's even better is this recipe freezes well and you can eat half now and pull half out later when you get unexpected guests and need a quick appetizer!!! Note that the calorie count is not correct, as the website does not recognize chicken sausage nor the light Velveeta.

1 lb chicken Italian sausage
1 (8 ounce) can mushrooms, drained
1 lb processed cheese (use Light reduced fat Velveeta)
1 -2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (I use 2T)
1 -2 tablespoon ketchup (I use 2T)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
4 dashes hot sauce (optional)
cocktail rye bread (I prefer pumpernickel but it's up to you)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a medium baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Arrange cocktail rye bread slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Place ground sausage in a skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain (if necessary - mine had no fat) and return to pan.
  • Dump in the mushrooms, Worcestershire, ketchup, oregano, garlic powder, hot sauce and the cubed cheese; decrease heat to medium and stir until melted.
  • Place approximately 1.5 tablespoons of the mixture on each slice of cocktail bread and spread slightly (but don't put it all the way to the edge to avoid runoff).
  • Bake in the preheated oven 10 to 15 minutes, or until lightly browned and crisp.
  • Feel free to freeze these AFTER baking for serving later - they are awesome heated from the freezer too!

1/4 c milk
1/2 c pizza sauce
1/2 c shredden colby jack cheese
1/2 c shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 tsp salt
1 pinch pepper
1 tsp italian seasoning
1 large egg
1 c all purpose flour
2 cooked johnsville sausages,skin removed and crumbled or use your favorite meat,bacon,chicken,salad shrimp,etc..

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 400^. Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with foil and spray well with no stick oil.
  • 2. In a large bowl combine all ingredients except the flour and sausage or other meat. Mix well then all the flour and blend in;until smooth. Pour and spread evenly in prepared pan. Sprinkle on the sausage or your choice of meat. Bake for 15 minutes ;then turn oven down to 350^ and bake for another 15 minutes.
  • 3. Remove from oven and sprinkle on some extra cheese if desired about 1/2 cup...place bace in ove til cheese melts about 3 minutes..
  • 4. Lift out by the foil and cut into bite size pieces with a pizza cutter and serve with warm pizza sauce...
