BOYSENBERRY SAUCE

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise in half
1 16-ounce package frozen boysenberries or blackberries
7 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup water
3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel

Steps:

  • Scrape seeds from vanilla bean into heavy medium saucepan. Add vanilla bean, berries, sugar and 1/3 cup water. Cook over medium-high heat until berries thaw, sugar dissolves and mixture boils, about 10 minutes. Purée berry mixture with vanilla bean in processor. Strain through sieve set over bowl, pressing on solids. Mix in orange juice and peel. Cover and refrigerate until cold. (Can be made 2 days ahead. Keep refrigerated.)

Simple boysenberry crisp. Use either fresh or frozen boysenberries.

6 cups boysenberries
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking powder
¾ teaspoon salt
⅓ cup butter, melted
½ cup white sugar, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Spread boysenberries in a 7x11-inch baking pan.
  • Mix flour, egg, baking powder, and salt together with a fork to make a crumble. Scatter over berries. Pour melted butter over crumble. Sprinkle sugar on top.
  • Bake crisp until top is browned, 40 to 50 minutes.
