This is an easy recipe for a brunch or breakfast. It has a wonderful praline topping. It's always a hit!

1 (8 ounce) loaf French bread, cut 1 inch slices
6 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 1/2 cups half-and-half
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon (I usually use more)
1/2 cup butter, softened (I melt mine)
1 cup light brown sugar
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 cup chopped pecans

Steps:

  • Butter a casserole dish (large rectangular one).
  • Fill dish with bread slices so dish is covered with bread.
  • Mix eggs, milk, half and half, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
  • Pour mixture over bread slices.
  • Refrigerate overnight (must hold overnight).
  • Make topping: Mix butter, brown sugar& corn syrup.
  • Stir in pecans.
  • Spread evenly over bread slices.
  • Bake uncovered until puffed and golden about 40 minutes at 350.
  • Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

1 (16 ounce) French bread, loaf
1/4 cup butter, softened
4 large eggs
1 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Cut bread loaf into about 10 (3/4-inch-thick) slices.
  • Spread butter evenly over one cut side of each bread slice.
  • Arrange bread, butter side up, in an ungreased 13- x 9-inch baking dish.
  • Whisk together eggs and next 5 ingredients; pour over bread, pressing slices down. Cover and chill 8 hours.
  • Remove bread slices from baking dish, and place on two lightly greased baking sheets.
  • Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 45 minutes or until golden.

A real timesaver when you have a houseful of guests or just don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I found this recipe in Company's Coming for Christmas cookbook and it has become a year-round family favourite.

1/4 cup butter, melted
7 large eggs
2 cups milk
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 loaf French bread, cut into 1 inch slices
confectioners' sugar, sprinkle (optional)

Steps:

  • Pour melted butter into bottom of baking sheet to coat.
  • Beat next 7 ingredients together well.
  • Dip both sides of each bread slice into egg mixture. Pour any remaining mixture over slices. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Can be frozen at this state.
  • Uncover and bake in 400 F oven on bottom rack for 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Place on rack to cool.
  • Dust with icing sugar when warm, if desired.
  • NOTE: Commercial eggnog can be substituted for milk for a richer, or more festive, flavour.
