A delicious fruity variation on oatmeal cookies.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ cup shortening
¾ cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup diced apple without peel
1 cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar. Beat in the eggs until well blended. Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; stir into the sugar mixture until well blended. Fold in the walnuts, oats and apples. Drop dough by spoonfuls about 2 inches onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Let cool on wire racks.

Found this in Woman's Day, Aug. 1, 2007. Our beloved German Shepherd passed away July of 06. Saving this for a possible future dog... Recipe said 5 to 6 dozen, but that depends on the size of your cookie cutter.

Number Of Ingredients 8

4 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal
1 1/4 cups water
1/4 cup apple, cored and minced (apple seeds are bad for dogs)
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon ground cloves

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 325°F.
  • Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly until combined to form dough.
  • Roll out dough on floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Using a cookie cutter, cut into shapes (bone shape suggested) until all the dough has been used.
  • Place cookies on ungreased foil (or parchment paper) lined baking sheets. Bake 30-35 minutes.
