CARAMELIZED ONION BACON CHEESECAKE BITES

Caramelized Onion Bacon Cheesecake Bites image

Caramelized Onion Bacon Cheesecake Bites is a sweet and savory holiday appetizer recipe made with caramelized balsamic onions. Each mini appetizer phyllo cup is filled with a savory cheesecake filling topped with brown sugar balsamic onions and crispy bacon bits.

Provided by Arlene Mobley - Flour On My Face

Categories     Appetizer

Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 large sweet onions (thinly sliced (about 3 1/2 to 4 cups sliced onion))
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
8 oz softened cream cheese
1 large egg (slightly beaten)
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 dash ground black pepper
6-8 tablespoons Balsamic Caramelized Onions (chopped finely, divided)
5 pieces bacon (cooked crispy and chopped finely, divided)
2 packages Phyllo Mini Shells

Steps:

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet on medium.
  • Add the sliced onions to the skillet and sauté for 5 minutes on medium heat to soften.
  • Add the brown sugar and Balsamic Vinegar to the skillet.
  • Sauté uncovered, occasionally stirring for about 8 minutes or until the onions are translucent and reduced in size by half.
  • Reduce the heat to low and slowly sauté the onions until golden brown and caramelized. The sauce will have thickened and will cling to the onions. This can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 minutes or longer. Do not overcook.
  • When the onions have caramelized remove pan from heat and allow to cool.
  • Refrigerate in an airtight container if making the appetizers the next day.
  • Beat the cream cheese, egg, salt, and pepper on high until thick and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  • Stir in 6 tablespoons of the balsamic caramelized onions and 2 tablespoons of the chopped bacon.
  • Using a small spoon or a frosting decorator bag fill each Phyllo cup with the cream cheese filling.
  • Bake in a preheated 350 F. degrees oven for 12-15 minutes or until the filling is set.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly. Top each baked Phyllo cup with 1/4 teaspoon of the remaining chopped balsamic caramelized onion.
  • Top each appetizer with a sprinkling of the remaining finely chopped bacon.

BACON, ONION AND CHEESE TART

Bacon, Onion and Cheese Tart image

This is my take on a traditional French tarte flambee, made on a crispy crust and topped with fromage blanc, bacon and onions.

Provided by Geoffrey Zakarian

Time 1h5m

Yield two 13-by-9-inch tarts

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 slices thick-cut bacon, cut crosswise into thin matchsticks
1 large onion, thinly sliced
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
3 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves removed and chopped
1/2 cup farmer's cheese
1/2 cup creme fraiche
1 large egg yolk
All-purpose flour, for dusting
1 sheet frozen puff pastry, defrosted
1 tablespoon ground pecorino
1 tablespoon minced fresh chives

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper.
  • In a medium saute pan, cook the bacon over a medium-low heat until it begins to render, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the onions and cook until they begin to soften, about 3 minutes. Season with pepper. Set aside to let cool. Add the thyme to the cooled bacon-onion mixture.
  • In a bowl, combine the farmer's cheese, creme fraiche, egg yolk and salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  • Flour a flat surface and place the puff pastry on top. Flour the top and gently roll into a 13-by-18-inch rectangle. Cut the pastry in half and transfer each to a lined sheet pan. Using a fork, dock the puff pastry (pierce it slightly with the tines), leaving a 1-inch border untouched.
  • Divide the cheese mixture between the two sheets of pastry and spread evenly on the docked area. Top each tart with half of the bacon-onion mixture.
  • Place the tarts in the oven on the lower racks and bake, rotating halfway through, until the crusts are dark golden, about 25 minutes. Garnish with the pecorino and chives.

MUSHROOM AND BACON CHEESECAKE

Mushroom and Bacon Cheesecake image

My clan loves anything with cream cheese, so I knew this savory cheesecake appetizer would go down as an all-time favorite. Add leftover mushrooms, bacon, red peppers and parsley for a pretty garnish on top. This is a great recipe to make ahead and freeze for when you're in need of a dish to pass. -Macey Allen, Green Forest, Arkansas

SAVORY BLT CHEESECAKE

Savory BLT Cheesecake image

Did you know that cheesecake could be savory instead of sweet? Tomato and green onions mixed with cream cheese is like an irresistible form of gazpacho. Served on lettuce, the BLT version is great on its own, but it's also a tasty appetizer when served with crackers. This is a flexible recipe, so use other cheese in place of the Gruyere, and add olives, crab meat, cooked mushrooms-whatever strikes your fancy. -Joni Hilton, Rocklin, California
