Light and fluffy deep fried hushpuppies are a real treat when served with a plate of fish and seafood, or with some good old Southern barbecue. Easy to make.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup Self-Rising Flour
1/2 cup Self-Rising Corn Meal
1 Tablespoon granulated Sugar
1/2 teaspoon Salt
Warm water as needed.
Cooking oil for frying.

Steps:

  • Place flour in a medium sized mixing bowl.
  • Add the corn meal.
  • Add the sugar.
  • Add the salt.
  • Mix all the dry ingredients together.
  • Gradually add enough warm water to make a thick batter. Set aside.
  • Heat cooking oil in a deep pot until oil reaches 350F degrees for frying.
  • Scoop batter by the Tablespoonful and carefully drop into the hot oil.
  • Let the puppies cook until golden brown on the bottom.
  • Flip puppies over in the oil if they do not flip on their own.
  • Fry until golden brown all over.
  • Remove when done and place in a paper towel lined bowl to cool.
  • Enjoy!

Southern Hush Puppies are golf ball sized, light and flakey cornmeal dough that is fried golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside served as a side dish to any southern meal. These hush puppies are ready in minutes!

oil (For frying)
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup Cornmeal
1 Tablespoon Sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons Baking Powder
2 teaspoons Salt
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
1/2 teaspoon Paprika
1/4 teaspoon Pepper
1 Egg (Large)
1 cup Buttermilk
4 tablespoons Butter (Cold and cut into small cubes)
Tarter Sauce (for serving)

Steps:

  • Preheat 2 inches of oil in a large skillet to 365 degrees. In a medium sized mixing bowl add the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper. Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until combined. Stir in cubed butter.
  • Drop the batter by rounded teaspoonfuls in the hot oil. Let cook until they are golden brown 2-3 minutes. Remove with a metal strainer on a paper toweled lined plate. Serve with tarter sauce if desired.

3 onions, grated, keep juice
3 eggs
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp salt
buttermilk

Steps:

  • 1. Mix everything with enough buttermilk to make a batter. Let sit for 30 minutes.
  • 2. Drop by spoonfuls into deep fryer. Cook until golden brown.

¾ cup milk
1 egg
2 tablespoons minced onion
1 cup baking mix
1 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Whisk milk, egg, and onion together in a bowl. Stir pancake mix, cornmeal, and salt into milk mixture to form a smooth batter.
  • Scoop ping pong ball-sized balls of batter using a small ice cream scoop; drop about 5 scoops per batch into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, 5 to 6 minutes. Remove hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat with remaining batter.

1 cup yellow cornmeal
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 large egg, room temperature, lightly beaten
3/4 cup 2% milk
1 small onion, finely chopped
Oil for deep-fat frying

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder and salt. Whisk the egg, milk and onion; add to dry ingredients just until combined. , In a cast-iron Dutch oven or an electric skillet, heat oil to 365°. Drop batter by tablespoonfuls into oil.
