This is another Allrecipes.com fav! My dad even asked for the recipe and he usually prefers to be critical of what I cook, but this was a winner! A great recipe if you take meals to people! It can also be versatile because if you follow the directions the herbs go on top of the bread. So you could make this savory OR sweet....

Number Of Ingredients 16

DOUGH
2 c water
1 c quick-cooking oats
3 Tbsp margarine or butter, softened
3 - 3 3/4 c all-purpose flour
1/4 c sugar
2 pkg (.25 oz) active dry yeast (5 teaspoons of bulk yeast)
2 tsp salt
1 egg
1 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp garlic powder (use minced if you want that real garlic kick)
1/2 tsp dried oregano
TOPPING
6 Tbsp margarine or butter, melted, divided
2 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese (or hard cheese blend)
1 Tbsp garlic salt

Steps:

  • 1. In a saucepan, bring water to a boil; stir in oats. Remove from heat. Stir in butter; cool to 120°-130°F.
  • 2. In a mixing bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Add oat mixture, combine until moistened. Add egg. Add seasonings to dough (basil, garlic, oregano). Beat on medium speed for 3 minutes. Stir in additional flour to form a stiff dough. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until dough is smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
  • 3. Let dough rest for 15 minutes. Punch dough down. Press dough into a 9x13in., greased, baking dish. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°.
  • 4. Brush dough with 4 Tablespoons of melted butter. Bake for 15 minutes. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese and garlic salt on top of bread; continue cooking for an additional 10-15 minutes until brown.

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 cups boiling water
1 cup quick-cooking oats
3 tablespoons butter, softened
3-3/4 to 4-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
2 teaspoons salt
1 egg
TOPPING:
6 tablespoons butter, melted, divided
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, pour boiling water over cereal. Add butter. Let stand until mixture cools to 120°-130°, stirring occasionally., In a large bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, sugar, yeast and salt. Beat in oat mixture until moistened. Add egg. Beat on medium speed for 3 minutes. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a stiff dough., Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes. , Punch dough down. Press dough into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes. , Brush with 4 tablespoons melted butter. Bake at 375° for 15 minutes. Brush with remaining butter. Combine the cheese, basil, garlic powder and oregano; sprinkle over bread. Bake 10-15 minutes longer or until golden brown.
