Incredible Honey Wheat Bread (No Bread Machine Required!) image

I can't remember where I found this but it was somewhere on the internet. If you don't have instant yeast, you can use active dry yeast and heat water, honey, and butter to 125 degrees before adding it to the mixture, that's what I do. This bread goes great with everything! I recommend chicken salad. Despite the many instructions and ingredients, this is quite easy.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons margarine, melted
1/2 cup honey
2 cups bread flour
1 2/3 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon cocoa
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
2 teaspoons instant coffee
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl.
  • Stir until dough comes together and pulls away from sides of bowl.
  • Knead for 10 minutes until smooth.
  • Transfer to lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat all sides.
  • Cover and allow to rise until doubled in size, at least 1 hour.
  • Shape into 4 long loaves and place on lightly greased cookie sheet, cover.
  • Let rise for 1 hour.
  • Bake in preheated 350 degree oven about 30-35 minutes. Baking times will vary.

In response to a request, this was found in the cookbook that came with my Toastmaster Bread Machine. I haven't tried it. Cook time includes mixing and rising time in machine, and this will vary according to your brand of machine.

1 1/4 cups water
1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup molasses
1/2 cup quick oatmeal or 1/2 cup regular oatmeal
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 cups bread flour
3/4 cup walnuts
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

Steps:

  • Place ingredients in bread machine pan in the order listed.
  • Set for regular or quick cycle, and desired crust setting.
  • Press start.

I created this stick-to-your-bones bread from the recipe on the back of the Vital Wheat Gluten box, I made a few changes and tried it to go along with Chicken and Barley soup. Oh, man!! This is a keeper. Enjoy!

2 1/2 cups warm water
1 (1/4 ounce) package active dry yeast
1/2 cup molasses
1 cup vital wheat gluten
2 cups stone ground whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup hulled sunflower seeds
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 -1 1/2 cup stone ground whole wheat flour

Steps:

  • Stir yeast and molasses into water.
  • Mix all dry ingredients except additional flour.
  • Combine dry mixture with yeast mixture knead in additioal flour to form elastic dough.
  • Place in greased bowl, turn greased side of dough up.
  • Let rise in warm place until double, 60-90 minute
  • Punch down dough and roll out on floured suface divide in half. Roll into loaves and place in greased bread pans.
  • Let rise 45 min - 1 hour.
  • Bake 350F for 40-45 minute.

1/2 cup water (70° to 80°)
1 egg
3 tablespoons honey
