EASY-PEASY GLUHWEIN (HOT GERMAN SPICED WINE/AKA "MULLED CIDER")

Easy-Peasy Gluhwein (Hot German Spiced Wine/aka

This is the super-easy version of Gluhwein. Don't waste space in the pot with fruit. The spices and heat will add a whole new level to the sangria! This is always a big hit at my Christmas parties! You can use 1 whole orange peel in place of the whole lemon peel, if desired.

GLüHWEIN (MULLED WINE) - DEBROSSES RESTAURANT, BERLIN

Glühwein (Mulled Wine) - Debrosses Restaurant, Berlin image

The recipe is different from others posted in that it contains raisins and almonds. The English translation of Glühwein is "glow wine." The mulled wine got its name because it radiates heat and gives the drinker a glow.

Note: I add some room temp sparkling water to the mixture while simmering it to make it a little less strong. I add the sparkling water until I get the taste I prefer.

GLUHWEIN (MULLED WINE)

This very easy recipe comes from Winemaker magazine. I liked it because I had all of the ingredients on hand, it is really fast, and because it warmed me up and helped alleviate the symptoms of the cold I had at the time. According to the recipe source, the mixture can be kept warm in a crockpot, or on a coffee warmer (covered) for several hours, and can be successfully reheated the next day. (Mine never lasted long enough for me to testify to the above statement.)

Number Of Ingredients 1

Amounts are not as important as your own personal tastes, but as a general rule: one bottle of red wine (it doesn't have to be expensive wine as your altering it anyway - this is the one time I would recommend buying cheap red wine), 3-4 cinnamon sticks, 4-5 whole cloves, 4-5 whole allspice, peel of a large orange (white part removed), 1-2 whole star anise, 1/2 to 3/4 cup of sugar (to taste), 1/2 cup of dark rum. Combine all the ingredients except the rum. Slowly, over low heat, heat through (DO NOT BOIL OR SIMMER - it should just barley steam). Hold at this temperature for 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat and add rum.

Steps:

  • Simmer on stove
