This is my go-to sloppy joe recipe. Liquid smoke is the key ingredient here.

1 pound lean ground beef
1 cup ketchup
¼ cup dried minced onion
3 tablespoons brown sugar, or to taste
2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, or more to taste
1 tablespoon liquid smoke flavoring
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 cup beef broth
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Cook and stir ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until meat is browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes; drain excess grease. Mix ketchup, dried onion, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoke flavoring, and garlic into beef, stirring until brown sugar has dissolved.
  • Stir beef broth into beef mixture and bring to a boil; reduce heat to low and simmer until thick, about 30 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper.

2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
3/4 cup chili sauce
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup prepared mustard
2 teaspoons chili powder
12 hamburger buns, split
12 slices cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef and onion until beef is browned; drain. Add chili sauce, water, mustard and chili powder. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Spoon 1/2 cup onto each bun; top with a cheese slice.

½ (12 ounce) bottle chili sauce (such as Heinz®)
¼ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
¼ cup brown sugar
½ teaspoon mustard powder

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes; drain and discard grease.

The BEST recipe for a homemade Sloppy Joe! Ground beef in a hearty tomato sauce on toasted hamburger buns. The perfect recipe for lunch or dinner.

1 small onion (finely chopped)
1/2 small green bell pepper (seeded and finely diced)
1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tsp yellow mustard
1/4 cup water
1 Tbsp brown sugar
15 oz can tomato sauce
1 lb lean ground beef (85%-90% lean)
1 Tbsp olive oil
½ tsp salt (or to taste)
¼ tsp ground black pepper (or to taste)
3 garlic cloves (minced)
4 hamburger buns (toasted if desired)

Steps:

  • Finely chop the onion. Seed and finely dice the green pepper.
  • In a bowl, combine the Worcestershire sauce, mustard, water, brown sugar, and tomato sauce.
  • Place a large skillet or dutch oven over medium/high heat. Add olive oil and ground beef. Saute the beef for about 5 minutes until cooked through and longer pink, breaking it up with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper and add in the diced peppers and onion. Cook another 5 minutes until the veggies are tender and beef is browned.
  • Add the minced garlic and saute 30 seconds until fragrant, stirring constantly. Add in the sauce and bring to a light boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve on toasted buns for Sloppy Joe Sandwiches.
