HOMEMADE AUTOMATIC DISHWASHER DETERGENT WITH BAKING SODA ?

Homemade Automatic Dishwasher Detergent With Baking Soda ? image

It Really Works! Get a sparkling load of dishes using baking soda and Borax--for pennies. We've been reading about the miracle uses of baking soda. So, one day, we ran out of automatic dishwashing detergent. In a pinch, we decided to make some detergent with two tablespoons baking soda mixed with two tablespoons of Borax (we have a box in our laundry room just gathering dust). You cannot believe how beautiful our dishes came out! For pennies a wash! We are now converts and will not need to buy commercial dish detergent. The cost: Since two tablespoons = one dry ounce, you can see how far this will go. A small 16 oz. box of baking soda costs under $1.00 and will last about 32 loads. A 76 oz. box of Borax ix about $5.00 and will last 152 loads of dishes. Assume you do one load a day, you will need 12 boxes of baking soda (or buy bigger versions, we just don't have that on hand here...) and two boxes of Borax. Total for the year to wash dishes if you do a load a day: approximately $22.00. Total for the year to buy commercial dish detergent: average $5 a large box, which lasts about a month (or less), costs approximately $60.00 a year. We based this on our frugal purchases of store brand detergent and Cascade. However, we know many people who use newfangled products such as cubes, gels, and tabs-all of which are more money and promise better results, but we bet the results are just as good as baking soda and Borax.

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 2

2 tablespoons baking soda
2 tablespoons borax

Steps:

  • Put mixture into washer's detergent holder as you would normally with any detergent.
  • Our dishes have never, ever looked cleaner-no scratches, no water spots, just crystal clear glasses, dishes, and silverware. Our dishwasher is cleaner inside, too. Typically, we don't love homemade products because they may not work better than store-bought solutions, but this is different.

HOMEMADE DISHWASHER DETERGENT

Detergent for the dishwasher is SO expensive. I searched the net for a home-made alternative and developed this simple recipe. We've been using it for a while now and it washes the dishes even better than the shop bought variety. The amount needed will depend on how soft your water is - we find 1 tablespoon is enough, but we're on tank water. You might need 2 tablespoons if you're on hard town water. Instead of Rinse Aid, we just use white vinegar.

LIQUID DISHWASHER DETERGENT

Liquid Dishwasher Detergent image

I searched for a long time and couldn't find a good liquid dishwasher detergent recipe, so I played around and invented this one. It was inspired by the many powdered detergent recipes. It rinses well, but if you have hard water, you might want to use some vinegar in the rinse cycle.

Categories     Soaps

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup(s) washing sodasoda (cleaner)
1 cup(s) baking soda (cuts out grease)
3 package(s) unsweetened lemonade drink mix ( added cleaning power, antibacterial and smells awesome)
1 cup(s) of kosher salt (reduces hard water build up - you might be able to reduce this amount if you have soft water
1 cup(s) water

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • If you are using this as a dry powder: Omit the water. Then pour all dry ingredients into an airtight container. Consider adding in a bag of uncooked rice in a clean cloth to help keep the dry mixture from clumping. Add one tablespoon of dry powder mix to your dishwasher dispenser. Also use vinegar or jet-dry in your rinse dispenser, too.
  • If you are making tabs: Add water, wait for fizzing to stop (about 1-2 minutes). Then add your mixture to ice cube trays, pressing with your fingers or back of a spoon. Let dry in a warm and sunny spot for 24 hours or till completely dry. Remove and add to an airtight container. Add one tab to the dishwasher dispenser. Also use vinegar or jet-dry in your rinse dispenser, too.
