For your next casual gathering, try these delicious, crispy deep-fried cheese curds served with an assortment of dipping sauces for a real crowd-pleaser.

Number Of Ingredients 9

16 ounces Cedar Grove Cheese Curds (1 pound)
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups lager beer
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 quart (4 cups) vegetable oil
Dipping sauce of choice, optional

Steps:

  • Instructions Place cheese curds in a mesh strainer. Whisk buttermilk and beer in a large, deep bowl. Submerge curds in strainer into the buttermilk-beer mixture. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper in a large, shallow bowl. Heat vegetable oil in a Dutch oven or deep-fat fryer to 375°F. Remove curds from buttermilk-beer mixture; drain well. Dredge curds in flour mixture, shaking off any extra coating. Fry curds, in batches, in vegetable oil for 1-3 minutes on each side or until light golden brown. (Do not crowd.) Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with dipping sauce if desired.

Here is another recipe for cheese curds. It's from the back of a bag of them from a creamery in Wisconsin. I haven't actually tried these yet. I will update when I do. I am sure that like other cheese curd recipes, it is not recommended that you substitute regular cheese as it WILL make a mess. String cheese should work instead of cheese curds if necessary, though.

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
½ cup milk
1 pound cheese curds
1 quart oil for frying

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the eggs and milk. Mix until smooth. Add more milk for a thinner batter. Coat the cheese curds with the batter.

Vegetable oil (for frying)*
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup milk or beer
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 (9-ounce) package fresh cheese curds, room temperature

Steps:

  • * Use enough vegetable oil to completely cover cheese curds while frying. In a deep fryer or large pot, heat vegetable oil (375 degrees to 385 degrees F). In a medium bowl, combine egg, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, and milk or beer until well blended. Add flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder; mix until smooth. Drop cheese curds in batter. Using a spoon, turn cheese curds to coat thoroughly. A few at a time, drop the coated curds into the hot oil; fry approximately 1 minute or until brown and puffed, turning to coat all sides (do not overcook, or the cheese curds will begin to melt and ooze through the coating. Remove from hot oil and drain on paper towels. Allow fried cheese curds to cool a couple of minutes before eating.

1 pound cheese curds
4 cups vegetable or canola oil
Marinara sauce, for serving

  • In a medium bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in the club soda and mix until smooth. Add the cheese curds to the batter and coat thoroughly.
  • Heat the oil in a large, heavy skillet or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat until a deep-frying thermometer inserted in the oil reads 360 degrees F.
