Yield 6 to 8 recipes

Number Of Ingredients 13

4 large Golden Delicious apples (about 3 pounds)
1/4 cup sugar
1 lemon, juiced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup walnuts or pecans, roughly chopped
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch fine salt
8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold butter, cut into small pieces
Vanilla ice cream, for serving, optional

Steps:

  • Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F.
  • Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch slices. Place apples in a large mixing bowl and toss with sugar, lemon juice, flour, and cinnamon. Pour into a lightly greased 9 by 13-inch baking dish, and spread out into an even layer. Set aside.
  • In another large bowl, mix together the nuts, flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the topping. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, gently work in the cold butter until pea-sized lumps are formed.
  • Top apples evenly with mixture and bake until apples are bubbly and topping is golden brown, about 45 minutes, rotating once halfway through cooking.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream.

Yield Serves 6 to 8

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 1/2 pounds assorted apples, peeled, cored and in 1/2-inch slices
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
2 tablespoons Minute Tapioca (flour or cornstarch can be substituted, but I prefer tapioca)
Pinch of kosher salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats (not instant)
1 1/4 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
10 tablespoons unsalted butter, slightly softened and cut into small cubes

Steps:

  • To make the filling, gently toss together the apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, tapioca and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Spoon the filling into a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan.
  • To make the crumb topping, stir together the flour, oats, dark brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl. Blend in butter with your fingertips, fork, or pastry blender until mixture forms pea-size clumps.
  • Spoon topping evenly over fruit filling and bake on a middle rack in a preheated 375 degree F oven until fruit is bubbling and the top is nicely browned, about 60 minutes. Let the crumble cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
