COUNTRY STYLE BAKED BEANS

Country Style Baked Beans image

This is the only way we eat baked beans at home. It does take a while to cook but the flavor is well worth it and the leftovers are even better. Instead of bacon or ham you can also use the leftover bone from ham without needing to any additional meat. Perfect with ribs, hamburgers or just plain hot dogs on a weekend afternoon.

COUNTRY-STYLE BEEFY BAKED BEANS

COUNTRY-STYLE BEEFY BAKED BEANS image

This is my husband's favorite baked beans recipe. It's based on what he recalls of his mother's. It was trial and error until I finally got it right. Let's just say, that night, there wasn't much talkin' at the dinner table... He was too busy eatin' and goin' back for more! It's a great, hearty yet economical, dish for potlucks and church dinners, family reunions and backyard barbecues.

COUNTRY STYLE BAKED BEANS

When you choose a main dish you always need a good side to compliment your meal. These baked beans are delicious with any meal especially bar b que.

Categories     Other Side Dishes

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 can(s) pork and beans (any brand will do) drained
3 Tbsp butter
1 small valdalia onion chopped
1 Tbsp bacon grease
2 Tbsp white sugar
2-3 Tbsp ketchup (any brand) or sweet baby rays bar b que

Steps:

  • 1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat add the 3 tbsp. of butter. Let it melt and add the chopped onion. Sautee the onion in the butter. The chopped onions should appear soft and clear. Add your sugar and mix well in the sauce pan.
  • 2. Add the drained cans of pork and beans to the butter, chopped onions, and sugar mixture. Stir well mixing all ingredients together over the medium heat. Add the ketchup next and stir well. Then at last add your bacon grease. I always save my bacon grease and use it in lots of dishes. So when I have it on hand it is good to use to flavor soup beans, green beans, baked beans, and corn bread.
  • 3. Turn the heat down on low and let simmer 5 to 10 minutes. (You can use bar b que instead of ketchup if you are having a bar b que dinner) Serve hot as a side. This is not a healthy side but we all do like to eat what tastes good and not what is good for you. Come on. Admit it. Once you try these you will not fix them no other way. Enjoy!
  • 4. Just double the recipe if you are cooking for a large group.
