CREAMY CREAMED CABBAGE

A bit different... tastes great. Cabbage, Romano cheese and a cream sauce are a perfect combination!

1 cup milk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons butter
¼ teaspoon salt
1 dash ground black pepper
1 medium head cabbage, shredded
1 cup grated Romano cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, blend milk, flour, butter, salt and pepper. Stir constantly until a thick white sauce has formed.
  • In a separate medium saucepan over boiling water, steam cabbage until tender but firm.
  • In a small baking dish, alternate layers of sauce, cabbage and Romano cheese.
  • Bake approximately 30 minutes, until sauce and cheese are bubbly.

4 slices bacon
¼ cup butter
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 large head cabbage, cored and shredded
½ cup sour cream

Steps:

  • Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Remove the bacon slices to cool.
  • Whisk the butter, flour, and salt into the drippings in the same pan. Stir in the cabbage, and cook, stirring occasionally, over medium heat until cabbage is tender, about 15 minutes. Crumble the bacon; stir the bacon pieces and sour cream into the cabbage mixture.

2 pounds ground beef
2 cans (28 ounces each) stewed tomatoes
1 medium head cabbage, shredded
2 large onions, chopped
6 celery ribs, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Add the tomatoes, cabbage, onions and celery; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 25 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir in salt and pepper.

A friend served this at a cook out and it was so good I begged for the recipe. She gave it to me on a napkin so I have to get it into my personal cookbook and would love to share it with you!

1 medium cabbage
1 lb smoked sausage
2 cups diced tomatoes
1 medium onion
1 pint sour cream
1 teaspoon flour

Steps:

  • Cut cabbage into bite size pieces. Cut sausage into 1/2 inch rings. Dice onion.
  • Brown onion in a large pot.
  • Add cabbage, tomatoes.
  • Fill pot with enough water to cover cabbage.
  • Place the sausage rounds on top of the cabbage, tomatoe mixture.
  • Cover and simmer until cabbage is done.
  • Add 1 tsp flour to sour cream and mix well. Add the mixture to the cabbage and stir. Place heat on low and cook an additional 20 minutes.

This rich comforting cabbage dish has plenty of old-fashioned goodness. The recipe is shared by Virginia Dishman of Lansing, Michigan, who admits she finds it a challenge to cook small quantities since she once fed a family of nine!

1 bacon strip, diced
2 tablespoons chopped onion
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 tablespoon water
1-1/4 teaspoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
Dash pepper
2 cups shredded cabbage
1 small tart apple, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup sour cream

Steps:

  • In a skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove to paper towel. In the drippings, saute onion until tender. Add the vinegar, water,sugar, salt and pepper; cook until bubbly. Stir in cabbage and apple; toss to coat. Cover and cook for 5-6 minutes or until cabbage is tender. stir in sour cream; heat through (do not boil). Sprinkle with bacon.

2 -3 stalks celery
1 carrot
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
1 1/2 cups mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 dash black pepper

Steps:

  • Shred Cabbage.
  • Chop Celery and Carrot (fine).
  • Mix the Vinager, sugar, and mayonaise together.
  • Combine all ingerdiants in a large bowl.
  • Let sit for 2 hour before serving.
  • For best results allow to sit overnight.
