ONION SYRUP COUGH & COLD REMEDY

Onion Syrup Cough & Cold Remedy image

While busy choking, gasping and wheezing with a bad cold, a friend asked, "Have you tried onion syrup?" I had never heard of it, so she sent me some internet links and lo and behold, "everyone" has heard of it but me!! Here is my simplified version. Cook time is "setting" time for the syrup, but you should be able to get a spoonful in about 2 hours if needed.

Time 12h5m

Yield 1 jar, 24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 2

2 vidalia onions or 2 red onions
1/2 cup sugar, more if necessary

Steps:

  • Use a clean 1 quart glass jar for making syrup and storing.
  • Layer small handful of chopped onions and about 1/8 cup sugar. Keep layering until jar is full. You can use more sugar if needed. The recipe-meister wanted a definite amount so I guesstimated at 1/2 cup for the whole thing. You just need to be sure that the individual bits of onion are well coated with sugar.
  • When finished layering, just close up the jar, shake it up a bit so the onion is all coated and leave it on the kitchen counter. In about 2 hours the onions will have reduced by about half because the sugar pulled the water and the beneficial therapeutic compounds out of them.
  • In 12 hours its done! You can begin using the syrup at this point. It will still be giving off syrup for two or three days, so that is when I remove the spent onion bits (they gave it all they've got! LOL) and put the jar of syrup away for when needed.
  • Serve by the teaspoonful when needed for coughs and colds.

ELDERBERRY COUGH SYRUP

Elderberry Cough Syrup image

I got this recipe from my friend Bethan in Wales. She's a vegetarian and always attends these wonderful meetings that involve very health conscious people. She often shares things with me and I was delighted when she sent me this little brochure with 3 very interesting Herbal Recipes that were put out by the West Wales Herb Group. I thought I'd share them with everyone on Recipezaar. I haven't made any of these as of yet, but if I do, I'll use agave nectar in it instead of sugar.

HOMEMADE COUGH SYRUP

Homemade Cough Syrup image

This is a good remedy for cough in adults. Apple cider vinegar has anti-bacterial and detoxifying properties. Honey coats the throat providing soothing relief to irritated and sore throats, and the cayenne pepper opens up congested nasal passages and relieves pain. I also add lemon juice for flavor and Vitamin C. Note: the taste is a little spicy but good and what it is better, it really works!.

  • Simmer over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  • To relieve cough, take 1 tablespoon two times a day, or as needed.

HOME MADE COUGH SYRUP

HOME MADE COUGH SYRUP image

This recipe came to me from my grandmother, who got it from her mother, in the Mountains of western North Carolina, over 100 years ago. It has had only one modification over the last one hundred plus years; about 25 years ago, our family dr. suggested the addition of ginger. It did work better! Our family has used this for generations, usually with good results! Just don't drive when taking this. in fact, be prepared to go to sleep!

Categories     Other Non-Edibles

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/2 cup(s) honey
1/2 cup(s) vinegar or lemon juice (both work)
1/2 cup(s) grain alcohol (unless you have access to good moonshine!)
2 tablespoon(s) ginger

Steps:

  • combine all ingredients in a small saucepan on top of stove on med-low heat. Heat, stirring often until comes to a simmer. Remove from heat. Let cool on cabinet or stove top, but not on heat. When needed for cough, shake well, until all is mixed again. Take 2 T. by mouth, wrap up in blanket and relax, preferably in bed or at least in a recliner. Does tend to make one sleepy!
  • NOTE-if you can't get grain alcohol or moonshine, you may substitute and good whiskey, scotch, bourbon, or other spirit that has a high proof. The higher the better. Store in high cabinet so young fingers can't reach.
