This is Presidential candidate Barack Obama's family chili recipe that he's been using for years. I live in Denver and saw something about the Brown Hotel making this recipe for the guests during the 2008 Democrat National Convention.

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 large onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb ground turkey or 1 lb beef
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon ground basil
1 tablespoon chili powder
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
tomatoes, several depending on size, chopped
1 (15 ounce) can red kidney beans

Steps:

  • Saute onions, green pepper and garlic in olive oil until soft.
  • Add ground meat and brown.
  • Combine spices together into a mixture, then add to ground meat.
  • Add red wine vinegar.
  • Add tomatoes and let simmer, until tomatoes cook down.
  • Add kidney beans and cook for a few more minutes.
  • Serve over white or brown rice. Garnish with grated cheddar cheese, onions and sour cream.

1 tablespoon Olive oil
1 head Onion, large chopped
1 head Green pepper, large chopped
3 cloves Garlic, chopped
1 pound Ground beef, grass fed
1/2 teaspoon Cumin, ground
1/2 teaspoon Oregano, ground
1/2 teaspoon Tumeric, ground
1/2 teaspoon Basil, ground
1 tablespoon Chili powder
3 tablespoon Red wine vinegar
28 ounce Canned peeled tomatoes, San Marzano
29 ounce Kidney beans, drained and rinsed

Steps:

  • Add olive oil to large saute pan and heat over medium heat
  • Saute onion and green pepper for about 5 minutes
  • Add meat to saute pan and brown. Once browned add spices.
  • Stir in vinegar and entire can of tomatoes. With masher, mash down tomatoes.
  • Stir in kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
  • Cook the chili covered over medium/low heat for about 15 minutes
  • Garnish with sour cream, cheese and or guacamole. Accompany with corn bread.

1 1/2 tablespoon Olive oil
1 head Onion white or red - large chopped
1 Green bell pepper chopped
3 cloves Garlic large, chopped
1 pound Ground beef or turkey
1/2 teaspoon Cumin, ground
1/2 teaspoon Oregano dried
1/2 teaspoon Tumeric, ground
1/2 teaspoon Basil, ground
1 tablespoon Chili powder
3 tablespoon Red wine vinegar
28 ounces Canned peeled tomatoes (San marzano)
29 ounces Kidney beans, drained and rinsed

Steps:

  • Heat olive oil in a large saute pan on medium high heat
  • Add the onions, green pepper, and cook until soft
  • Add the meat to the pan. Once the meat has browned, add the spices
  • Stir in the red wine vinegar and tomatoes
  • Using potato masher, mash the whole tomatoes down
  • Stir in drained kidney beans
  • Cook the chili covered for 15 minutes on med-low heat heat

3 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tbsp olive oil
1 can red kidney beans

several tomatoes, depending on size, chopped
1/4 tsp ground cumin
shredded cheddar cheese (for garnish)
1/4 tsp ground oregano
sour cream (for garnish)
1/4 tsp ground turmeric
