Children will delight in this unique cake that's formed into the shape of an ant hill. This Russian favorite is fun to make with the kids, too!

¾ cup unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
½ cup white sugar
4 ounces sour cream
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 (13.4 ounce) can dulce de leche
2 tablespoons poppy seeds, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet.
  • Combine 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of melted butter and sugar in a bowl; stir well. Whisk in sour cream until smooth. Mix flour and baking powder and sift over batter. Knead everything until a smooth, stiff dough forms.
  • Using the meat grinder attachment of your kitchen aid, pass handfuls of the dough through the grinder. Spread ground dough pieces bits evenly over the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
  • Beat 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of softened butter in a bowl with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Add dulce de leche and beat until well combined. Add the cooled cake pieces to the caramel mixture and fold in with a spatula until well combined.
  • Mound the mixture onto a serving plate. Using buttered hands, form the mixture into an ant hill. Sprinkle with poppy seeds.

30 Oreo cookies
1 (13 ounce) bag peppermint patties
2 pints vanilla ice cream
20 vanilla wafers
8 chocolate-covered almonds
8 round chocolate-covered caramel candies
black decorating gel
candy corn (to garnish)

Steps:

  • Place Oreo's in food processor and process to coarse texture.
  • Add peppermint patties and process to coarse texture.
  • Coat a 10 inches spring form pan with cooking spray, add cookie mixture and press down gently to coat bottom and up 1/2 inches on the sides.
  • By spoonfuls, add ice cream.
  • Use back of a spoon to smooth ice cream evenly on the top.
  • Cover with foil and freeze overnight.
  • Place vanilla wafers in food processor and blend until smooth.
  • Place in a sealed bag until needed and store at room temperature.
  • Remove rim of spring form pan and place cake on serving platter.
  • On one side of cake, slowly pour vanilla wafer crumbs to form a mound, or "anthill.".
  • Arrange "ants" on cake using one chocolate covered almond for each body and one chocolate covered caramel for each head.
  • Pipe on eyes and legs with gel.
  • Garnish with candy corn.
