Baking Powder Biscuits image

Oh my gosh!!! I found my handwritten recipe from junior high school with all of the variations!!! I still make these today over 55 years. oops that is old!

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 c all purpose flour, sifted
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
1/2 c crisco
2/3 c milk
VARIATIONS
BACON:
1/2 c (about 6 strips) add crisped cooked bacon to flour and shortening mixture
CHEESE:
3/4 c sharp cheddar cheese, grated to flour and shortening mixture
ORANGE:
1/2 liquid with orange juice. before baking sprinkle with orange sugar (1 tsp grated orange rind with 1/4 c sugar)
*BUTTERSCOTCH: (CINNAMON ROLL)
*ICING

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 450. Bake 10 to 15 minutes
  • 2. Combine dry ingredients. Cut in shortening 'till size of course crumbs. (add bacon or cheese if desired). Add milk (1/2 orange juice and 1/2 milk, if making orange buscuits) ALL AT ONCE. Stir 'till dough follows fork around bowl. Knead 15 sec. *Pat or roll to 1/2" thick (add orange sugar if desired). Cut. (I had a buscuit cutter, uptown!!) or with a glass turned upside down). Bake as above.
  • 3. *BUTTERSCOTCH: Roll out to 1/8" thick, brush with melted butter, sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon and chopped nuts (and raisins if desired). Roll as for jelly roll. Slice 1/2 thick, place on cookie sheet. Bake as above. Watch so they don't burn!
  • 4. *ICING: 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 TBSP milk, 1 TBSP vanilla. Mix until smooth. Ice buscuits...YUMMM
